israel4ever
-Vlad Guerrero was simply unaffordable when you consider that DISK problems are very serious. Not when you have Sweeney/Anderson/Reed, esp. -Javy Lopez -- Miguel Olivo is playing almost as well while making a fraction of his salary. -LaTroy Hawkins - who knew he'd give the Cubs a discount? Sox had too many holes that needed to be filled to pay that kind of money to a set-up man -- we already have Marte and Shingo, remember? Willie is kicking his ass so far in EVERY department, and is doing so on 300K. Get over it. Listen......if you want to play Fantasy Baseball with JR's money, go ahead. I prefer to stay in REALITY. Key phrase = "so far"
southsider2k5
Here is my point... Contending for the AL Central may be good enough for some of you guys (And Reinsdorf), but I find it totally unacceptable. I want the Sox to contend for a World Series; for them to do so, they have to rid themselves of their "small market mentality". That means they need to be constantly looking to improve the team, and not trying to "nickel and dime" their way to do so. If JR is not willing to make that kind of comittment, he should sell the team, or quit his bulls*** about being committed to bringing a World Series to the South Side. This team is 24th in MLB in attendance and is drawing only 42.8% of capacity MLB attendance leaders This team is in first place, and still isn't drawing s***. When does the teams responsibilty end, and the fans start? They by far have the lowest attendance of any first place team. Even the Twins who lost as much as we did during the offseason are drawing 1000 more per night in that way inferior Metrodome. Geesh even KC who is HORRIBLE is out drawing the Sox. southsider2k5
"If you build it, they will come." More like "If you build it they will come, as long as it isn't too cold, or school isn't in session, or if the Cubs aren't in town, or if its a half price night, if the team is in first place, and if JR sells the team." This team is in first place, and drawing 12,000 people to weekday games. The only reason we even show an average of 19K is because of the openning day sell out. Take that away and we have to be at about 17K. People say a lot of things, but I don't see it.

WSox30
I personally don't give a damn about the attendance because I am not a cubs fan. I understand the more butts in the seats equals the more money we get to spend on players but we're in first place after a 3 game skid boys. I'm hella happy with the team we have and permission should only be given to bash our minor league system if more than half of all the names we talk about in the minors are busts. And the season is a marathon so don't talk about I want to contend for the world series until we lock up the central. I think if we get to the playoffs we'll be deadly. Fact of the matter is that all the players you are talking about we have in place. And israel4ever....you were bashing Maggs defensive prowness compared to Vlads...so why would you move someone who you dont think is that good defensively to center?!?! witesoxfan
Contending for the AL Central may be good enough for some of you guys (And Reinsdorf), but I find it totally unacceptable. Duh. Everyone of us feels that way. I want the Sox to contend for a World Series; for them to do so, they have to rid themselves of their "small market mentality". That means they need to be constantly looking to improve the team, and not trying to "nickel and dime" their way to do so. JR is a buisness man. He does what he can to win a World Series, but he is an owner of the Sox to make money. However, it is possible to win the series while "nickel and diming" it. The A's have won 100 games 3 straight years with a payroll of $40-50 mill. The Angels won the series a couple years ago with a payroll of $70 mill or so. Florida won it last year with a payroll of $50 mill. It's possible. However, to accomplish it, you have to spend money effeciently. Spending $14 mill on a player is not effeciency. Spending $8 mill a year on a one-dimensional player. Those kinds of things. You CAN win the WS with a payroll of $65 mill. But if you spend money on s***(ala the Mets, Rangers, and even the Sox as well as several other teams), you aren't going anywhere.
DBAHO
Listen to this from Ponson afta his performance, Later Ponson said he watched the videotape and conferred with catcher Javy Lopez. "I'm really [ticked] off," Ponson said. "I don't think I pitched that bad. ... I talked to Javy, and he said of those 11 hits they got off me, about three of those were on bad pitches. All the rest were on good pitches. Right now, I'm working hard, and the harder I work, the harder I get hit. "I have to regroup. I still have a lot of starts to go. I'm not in a panic mode yet." Steff
Sounds like Ponson went to the Billy Koch school of quotes after bad performances. Hardly. He pitched well... the Sox just hit everything they swung at.
Guest JimH
Ponson didn't pitch bad, it was just the hitter's night. He had seven strikeouts which shows his stuff had life.
aboz56
Ponson is overrated and will never duplicate the success he had last year...I for one am glad we don't have to deal with him and his ERA which is growing by the day...
southsideirish
I don't really care how anyone wants to spin it. 6IP 11H 7ER 2BB is a horrible night for anyone if he is hitting his spots or not. He is overrated because of one good season. If this was a Buehrle or Loaiza performance we would be getting more depressed about them by the second. He is an average pitcher who had a really good year during his contract season. That's all.
Old Socks
Ponson was a good morve for the O's. They got a pretty promising pitcher for him last summer. He'll win 12-14 games this year, I predict.
