baggio202
i dont get this one at all..it looks like the orioles did everything right...12 minute stations with water b reaks in between..they pulled him of fthe field when he was struggling...they got him to the hospital before he was in heat stroke...this doesnt make sense as a football coach where we start conditioning kids end of july - early august this stuff just scares the hell out of me...you see kids who spent all summer playing video comes in out of shape and you just know something like this someday is bound to happen...if your are gonna play sports competetively you got to stay in shape year round.. this was an oregon kid too ...thoughts and prayers are with his family

Chisoxfn
This is terrible news. Man, a true tragedy. This guy seemed like a good kid and well no one should have to die at such a young age. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

clujer420
That's really unfortunate. However, as an athlete and quite frankly as a human being, we have to know our limitations. It sounds like he was pushing himself, obviously, beyond his capabilities. And why? It was like the first day of spring training. What's the point? I just hope he didn't have a family of his own (like a wife and/or kids)...that would make this story all the more tragic.

Makes you wonder if there wasn't something else in play here besides the heat and pushing himself too far. Such a horrible thing to happen. cwsox
it is truly tragic - it is real possible it was an undiagnosed genetic thing - if the kid was trying to make up ground real fast it is also possible it could have been an over the counter performance enhancing drug - people pop effedra all the time and that is speed and it does kill - pushes the heart rate up and that is not good - I grieve for the family. WhiteSoxPride3035
This is a black day for baseball. Let his memory be carried on by his family and the Baltimore Orioel's clubhouse. He will be missed by the people and the fans on MLB. Let our prayers go out to his friends and family.
witesoxfan
They did find nutritional supplements that contain effedrin in his locker....so effedrin kills again. I hope they make that an illegal drug for all...as it is, it is only illegal for those under the age of 18. That s*** is serious....causes heart attacks and seizures and all types of stuff like that...and it apparently also causes heat strokes. After all this, the goverment better look closely at effedrin....it is frickin deadly and should be banned by all and never produced again. I have two friends that take that crap and I've finally got them off it. I don't even understand why people take it. There weren't really overweight or anything to begin with. I know its a big weight loss thing, but come on, your just going to put it back on when you stop. The only ways to permantly lose weight imo, is an improved diet and exercise. You really can't short cut it, unless you go with lipo which is really dangerous, but even after that you got to exercise and eat right so you keep it off. MurcieOne
This is f***ing horrible.......a player dies in the prime of his life........ if this is part of some type of greater "plan".........it's one f***ed up plan.

If this stuff is as "deadly" as you're saying, then the people taking it have to be responsible and either stop taking it, or deal with the consequences of taking it. Early on, this was not possible because it wasn't as obvious that it's dangerous (and I don't know if it is or not, nor do we know if he was even taking the stuff, but I'm saying it is and that he did for the sake of this discussion). But now there is awareness, and people need to take notice of it. The person I feel bad for is his wife and yet-born child. He was a 23 year old guy -- plenty old to be able to make the right decision. It's unfortunate that he had to take something to make him lose weight -- a little discipline is all a person needs to stay in good shape (unless they "have a thyroid problem"). cwsox
I take it usually an hour before hockey.......because It gives me an energy boost........but now I am seriously thinking about stopping... stop, for your sake and the sake of your family - how many need to die before the "side effects" will make an impression on you? We'll all be saying, Yeah, he is a great kid, an great Sox fan, and he knew the stuff was dangerous but he took it anyway, what a damn dumb f*** to do this to himself and his family.... It is not only the risk of taking it now, there is also its long term damage - the heart and metabolism were not made to be revved by speed - you want to get the heart rate up, do a treadmill or jumping jacks - When did I stop taking it? I came home from work and the dog was dead after obvously trying to tear about the house and I couldn't figure out what was what until I saw the empty diet supplement bottle - she got into it and the effedra/ephedra killed her and it was a horrible death, just like Rashidi Wallace, just like this O's player I did a little research and its not just the short term but the long term risks - there are ephedra-free products out there too - check at a health store for ephedra free products - they don't rev the heart the way ephedra does and they boost the metabolism for what you are looking for -

cwsox
NPR just did a story on the autopsy results - ephedra/effedra was in his body which is what caused it to get his body temperature up to 108 and cooked his organs - ephedra/effrada was in the bodies of Rashidi Wallace and the other college player who dropped dead in practice that year - ephedra/effedra was in the locker of Kory Stringer who droipped dead at the Vikings training camp - speed kills. I hope everyone out there who takes this s*** toss it down the toilet now. It is a horrible way to die and how much more proof does anyone need that it kills?
