NUKE_CLEVELAND
Will his detractors please keep quiet for another 4 days? He pitched a whale of a game even though he was rather shaky in the 1st inning & he really deserved to get a win for his efforts. These 1-0 2-1 losses really piss me off especially after a 15 run explosion like the other night.
qwerty
i know what u mean, i would rather have them score 4,5,6 runs a game than 15 because it seems like the next game they hit like total s***
Capn12
yeah my boy JonnyG has gotten the hard shaft lately. Sure, his BB:K ratio still sucks. It always has. But now he is getting people out, unfortunately the bats go eerily silent on his days to pitch
slick03
i was happy to see all the double plays he got...that made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside
southsider2k5
Jon really could have had the shutout. It was an awesome gutsy preformance, espesially to take the extra inning of work to save the pen for the nightcap. To Jon!

I just can't understand how they let Roberts stel again. I don't know whether Jon and Sandy were trying to keep him close or not since I didn't see the game. The throwing error by Alomar cinched the deal and nailed it shut on the Sox, who couldn't mount any offense. The small ball that we all hear and talk about beat us yesterday. But Jon shows the promise the Sox and his Soxtalk supporters see in him. Maybe next game the Sox will get the 1-0 win for Jon.
cwsox
Will his detractors please keep quiet for another 4 days? Unfortunately, no. What is the over/under on the next "Garland sucks" thread? Meanwhile, my props to JG.
Wong & Owens
If Garland is not going to be a big strikeout pitcher--and he won't--then he needs to get that k/BB ration up closer to 2.00. Good control pitchers without huge strike out totals like Moyer, Maddux, etc. have ratios close to that 2.00 or higher. Although, neither Moyer nor Maddux got to that number until they were in the league 3-4 years. GArland seems to be getting better every season, so if he keep it up, he might really be something in the next 2-3 years.
DonkeyKongerko
Garland needs to show that he can stay mentally focused in later innings when he has a lead. He also needs to show that he can pitch against Cleveland.
CubKilla
Will his detractors please keep quiet for another 4 days? No Granted, he pitched well yesterday. It's the one start out of 10 every year where JG looks completely dominant. Only problem with yesterday's performance was the Sox decided to play Corpseball in both games. I only say that because PK was responsible for 5 of the 6 runs scored in Game 2. Jon Garland is still, at best, a number 4 on a decent team and a number 5 on a good team. He's the definition of mediocre. He doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to hunker up and bear down. And he still cannot avoid the big inning in a game..... especially when he's spotted an early lead.
Wong & Owens
Whatsamatter with you people? Garland has had exactly two full seasons as a regular starter. He's not yet 25. He's improved his ERA, opponents' OBP, K/BB ratio, and WHIP in each season, and looks like he's on track to continue that trend this year. He's not fully matured yet, but going 8 innings, and only giving up 1 run despite walking 7 vs. the Yankees shows he's got some guts. He might be only a good #4 right this minute, but he should move into good #3 by the end of this season, and if he keeps improving at the rate he has, he'll be as good aas Buehrle either next season, or the season after that. You can't dictate when a person will "get it," or when their brain will catch up with their body. Just because Clemens got it right away, doesn't mean everyone else can. The list of excellent pitchers that weren't very good until their 4th or 5th seasons is very, very long.
WSox30
Even with all those walks...he seems to get out of the jams most the time. I definetely want the walks to go down, but they don't always seem to affect the game that much. He has had wins with like 7 walks before. Queen Prawn
Per MLB stats, his ERA stayed relatively the same those two season (4.58 to 4.51). His K/BB ratio is about the same as well (in 2002 112/83 and in 2003 108/74 ). His WHIP is close as well 1.41 to 1.37. The opponents BA went from .340 to .329 -> some improvement here. He has a great outing and then he proceeds to go out and suck for a couple outtings. He is erratic. Does he have the 'stuff?' Sure, but he lacks the intestinal fortitude, to quote CubKilla, at this point. Do I think he can get better or at least more consistant? Sure, but he needs to get that 'intestinal fortitude' to do so. MLB's Stats for Jon Garland.
greasywheels121
I really see Garland having a SOLID season. I can see him going on a mad streak of wins pretty soon in 2004.
Gene Honda Civic
JG has been the sox best starter over the last 20 starts of last year, through the first 7 of this season. -- He had a 3.94 ERA in his last 20 starts last year, and has a 3.97 in his first 7 this year. Loiaza is the only starter to compare, he had a 3.84 ERA after the ASB last season, and currently has a 4.34 ERA through 7 starts this season. I think people look for reasons to dislike Garland because he has the personality of a paper plate, and tends to have this disinterested look on his face all the time. Fact is, he could very easily wind up our best starter at the end of the year. It's scary, but his numbers aren't far off those of Buehrle's, or what we'll realistically get from Loaiza this season.
