Steff
Any thoughts on this one guys..? Should the mother be held responsible..? http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/st...010.htm&sc=1110 MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) - A woman who was convicted of creating an environment that contributed to her 12-year-old son's suicide after constant bullying at school received a suspended sentence Friday. Judith Scruggs showed no visible emotion as she was placed on probation for five years by Superior Court Judge Stephen Frazzini. She also must undergo counseling and perform 100 hours of community service. J. Daniel Scruggs hanged himself in his bedroom closet with a necktie on Jan. 2, 2002. Heads22
I've always wanted to know....why is the word "hanged" used instead of "hung"?
Queen Prawn
She's hardly the only person that didn't stop this. I was bullied a great deal in grammar school and did several of the things that the little boy did - trying to avoid school, etc. No one recognized it then either. Hell, I didn't get therapy until I arranged it myself when I was in my early twenties (once in college and once afterwards). The fact is yes, she should be punished, but I think therapy would help her a great deal more than sitting in a jail cell. From my experience, there are parents out there that can't recognize these signs because they will feel like it is admitting failure by having to get therapy (like I said, from my own personal experience as the person being bullied and depressed, not as a mom). I also think the teachers at his school should be taught how to take action against bullies instead of just saying, 'kids will be kids.' Schools can arrange for in-house counseling (at least at the HS age, not sure about grammar school age).
Soxy
I've always wanted to know....why is the word "hanged" used instead of "hung"? Interesting question: This word was used in middle/moddern English and in middle/early English the suffix for past tense was ide--which became more regulized to ed. I would imagine that we simply didn't switch over. In fact in Old English it was often written "singed," so I would guess sing was regulated and hang was not. I would be in another 50 or 100 years hung will have become the regular past tnese very here. (Source: Oxford English Dictionary)

redandwhite
There was a girl who committed suicide at my school this past year even though I didnt have any first hand experience with her family, I was around the girl enough to know that she did get picked on, but had mental problems which ultimately took her life. She was on the antidepressants, she was in therapy, she had a happy family.. sometimes these people are just born with these problems they can't face and they choose the decision they think is best, and thats to kill themself.
