Not a bad report Jason. A few things I think though, are that Wing will be in Winston to start the year, Malone will be in Charlotte, and Ring will be in Winston because they are gonna try him out as a starter, but if he stays in the pen, then he will be in Bham for sure. You forgot to mention Eric Welsh, and his 23 HR last yr in Winston. He will provide some power for the Barons. Rogo may play the first half in Winston as well, depending on his Spring. But hell I could be totally wrong about all this so dont feel offended by my disagreement. But all in all, you were pretty good at rating the guys, except let me just say that 23 of the hits that I gave up last yr. were infield hits and 12 of those were bunts. So my hit/inn. ratio looks brutal because guys like to push bunt on me since I fall to third alittle bit.

LMFAO! I pitched in hs and when i got hit, they let me know it. Maybe that's why i'm a truck driver? And the fact that i can throw about 65 now. :D

Cheap hits really have to piss a pitcher off.

Well Mr. Bullard stole some of my thunder, but that's good because it validates a few things I have heard, such as Ring being used as a starter.

Other things...

1. Keep in mind that last year (actually the last 3 years) the outlook for the Barons the last couple years has not been good either. As far back as 2000 we weren't expecting Buehrle or Ginter at this point. Nor did anyone have any idea Buehrle would have the year he did. The past couple of years the outlook hasn't been great as far as position players. No one expected Miles to break out, Olivo to be back in AA, or the Barons to score so many runs by playing small ball. Valentine was in ST with the Tigers, Monuz was 19 and skipping high A, Sanders and Stewart were thought of as roster fill, etc. etc.

It is easy to say that the team doesn't look as good as they did last year, but that was at the end of the season, not what the team looked like before ST started.

2. Valentine did not break Almonte's team and SL save record..... He tied it.

3. Ulacia's problem last year was control. It may not have showed in walks, but I saw more 2-0 and 3-1 counts with him pitching than I can remember in a long time. He didn't walk a lot because he got hit hard when he got in those counts. Dennis will get a shot to right the ship this year, but likely it will be in the bullpen in AA.

4. I don't think West or Malone are definites for AAA. Either or both could be back in AA.

5. Lastly, and this is just something that bugs me, but Barons is not singular so using the word in the possesive form of Baron's in incorrect. If using the apostrophe, it should be Barons'.

Hey Jim, have you heard anything about Jason Dellaero?  I heard somewhere that he is going to pitch exclusively this year, but I am not sure how reliable that info was.

I hope Jason will just concentrate on one thing. I've heard he is pretty advanced considering he's never pitched exclusively.

We know he's got a gun.

Hey! I'm a local driver. The over the road guys are a different breed.

What do you drive, over the sidewalks?

Jason, great report, thanks! Things like this make me love soxtalk more and more each day - I feel like I am learning things and not hanging with idiots (as on the MLB boards)

As far as the uncertainty between where the players will be. I'll be updating my reports once the official minor league rosters come up. I'm only guessing.

Also, Hudler, thanks for the remarks. In reference to Barons, I always thought it was that way. From now on whenever I write a piece on them it will say Baron.

Jim - Your probalby right in regards to those players.

I keep thinking that the Sox are going to go slow at first with Corwin. I do think your right on the money when it comes to Wing. As far as Ring goes, I'm going to anticipate to see how he does as a starter. It can't hurt to put him there because he'll throw more innings and build up his stamina.

Thanks for the info regarding yourself. Stats are a funny thing like that. I watch games and you'll see a pitcher really give up a ton of runs, but he's really pitching a great game the opponents are just getting a lot of dinkers. Things like that don't show up in the stat sheet though. It would just look like that pitcher struggled that day.

Eric Welsh also is what 25 years old. He should have hit 23 homers last season, since he was playing in AA the season before. the . 240 or so average he had is not acceptable.

Rex, I dont know what is in store for JD this yr. He very well might end up becoming a full time pitcher because as you probably know he has a freakin cannon. Sorry for stealing your thunder also.

Chris B, .240 aint that bad for a guy that hits 20+ bombs a yr. Also, the Carolina League is no walk in the park either for hitters and it is known around the circuit as a pitcher's league. And age really doesnt matter because as can be seen by Miles last yr., some guys just take a little onger to figure it all out. Hitting is the hardest thing in the world and if you dont play the game, you shouldnt criticize.

Great report, Jason! Like I've said before Neal Cotts is a stellar MLB pitcher in the making! I saw him pitch here at Illinois State University in 2001, when I was a freshman and he was a junior (his final season here), and he did nothing short of impressing me! He's a nice guy too.

Jim Bullard, you are going to enjoy spending time with Neal!

Jim, no sweat on stealing my thunder. If you have info, please share it.

Secondly, on Welsh. I know nothing about him as a player, but one things jumps out at me immediately based on what you said and on his numbers from last year. Considering that the Hoover Met is definitely a pitcher's park and not many guys hit 20 Hr's for the Barons, how well do you think he might do in Birmingham? Could he struggle like Adam Johnson did a few years ago, with his HR stroke creating a lot of long flyouts in the gaps?

Off the top of my head, the only guys I can think of that hit more than 20HR for the Barons recently are:

Borchard

Darron Ingram

Crede (only 3 at the Met)

Rowand

Carlos Lee

Jeff Liefer

Luis Raven

Mike Cameron

There may have been a few others, but that is not a shabby list of hitters...

one other thing i just wanted noted here.. there may not be alot of 20 or so hr hitters but we sure do have a heck of alot of rbi guys... which tells me that they do have the basic down of hit and get em over which also scores runs..........some guys it takes a change of scenery (or coaching) to get alive...this is exactly what i believe is going on with miles... someone here sparked a fire in that kid that he got nowhere else and im sure when he has another season this year like last he will be looked at better......welsh will be fine.......
