Gene Honda Civic
Looking at cotts performance today, I think there are a ton a positives. First three Batters (from tonights game) Bottom 1st B:0 S:1 O:0 Lew Ford singles on a ground ball to left fielder Carlos Lee. Bottom 1st B:1 S:1 O:0 Cristian Guzman singles on a ground ball to center fielder Timo Perez. Lew Ford to 2nd. Bottom 1st B:3 S:2 O:1 Jacque Jones grounds out, shortstop Jose Valentin to first baseman Paul Konerko. Now ask yourself what would have happened if they weren't playing on the carpet inside the dome -- Ford hits a Broken bat grounder into the hole, Manos fields it -- 1 out -- Guzman hits a squibber back up the middle, It's fielded by Uribe or Manos, MAYBE he's out, but Maybe he's safe -- Hunter Grounds out/or into a tailor-made DP There's a big difference between playing at the roller rink and at USCF. EvilJester99
Thats an awful lot of "What ifs". I kinda of hope this gets KW to really work at getting another starter.

Yoda
The Sox will get Minnesota tomorrow. Still, we desperately need a 5th starter. Winning 5 in a roll would have been great. Instead, Minnesota gave us some of our own medicine. Scoring more than 6 runs.
Gene Honda Civic
I just realized I forgot the WP -- which would negate the DP I had counted on, if guzman was able to beat out a throw. Still If the ball bounces our way(i.e. at home), Cotts is probably out of the inning in 12 pitches. -- Then we have a completly different game. SoxAce
LeCroy barely hit that one out and he threw a hanger to Justin M. (that was partly Olivo's fault as well for letting him speed up his bat)

What?! Did we watch the same game? Lew Ford jumped all over Cotts fastball - a one-hop liner that perfectly split 3B and SS. There is absolutely no way in hell anyone would have touched that ball let alone thrown him out. On any surface. Guzman - ditto - a hard grounder up the middle, with his speed? No chance. The ONLY thing that could have saved Cotts is he didn't make a wild pitch with Ford and Guzman on base. The next Twin hit what would have been a routine DP ball to Manos - without said wild pitch, the Ford ends up at 3rd with 2 outs. Twins still would have scored at least 1 run that inning, but maybe the game would have been closer, with Sox less desperate against Radke......Or maybe not. Cotts was just bad. He rolled a curve for a HR and didn't bother throwing it anymore. His change was ineffctive, so he was basically a 1-pitch pitcher - and he ain't Zambrano. His location wasn't all that either. Bad combination.
elrockinMT
I like Neal Cotts but this wasn't the right way or time to make him the 5th starter. I just knew we were headed for trouble when Ozzie said they would treat Neal a a relief pitcher. Didn't make any sense. They didn't want to send someone down and bring a 5th starter up obviously, but asking Cotts to be an effective starter at this point was not going to happen. I hope he is ready for the next outing and we have an winner.

YASNY
I agree that Cotts was kind of thrown to the wolves. He hadn't pitched in 10 days, so that has to be considered in addition to what else has been mentioned. I hope KW keeps working the phones, but you can't assume Cotts won't be able to do the job based on tonight's performance.

CSF
What, who, huh?!?!!??! That was one of the worst gofer balls I've seen all season long. MY GOD!! FWIW, LeCroy's shot looked worst on the telecast than it actually was. It barely cleared the 2nd row (the guy who caught it was sprawled through the 1st row). Morneau's shot: Well, that was as bad as it looked. :headshake
flippedoutpunk
I followed the game on MLB gameday and i saw that cotts was gettin his 2 strike count really quickly. After that it was basehit city. Got an out pitch?

Got an out pitch? He wasn't pitching smart he was throwing offspeed pitches with 2 strikes on the hitters when he should be throwing high fastballs that no one can catch up to. DBAHO
Am I tht only one that thinks we need a #1 or #2 starter...? The only thing is, it's very hard to let alone find a #1 or #2 starter let alone trade for one unless u are either a big budget team OR hav a great farm system. The Critic
Am I tht only one that thinks we need a #1 or #2 starter...? I think we've all resigned ourselves to wanting what the Sox can actually get rather than what they really need. Fact is, they drained a lot of prospects in last year's trades and aren't willing to take on significant salary, so a cheap/attainable 5th guy is all Sox fans can hope for at this point. Dreaming is nice, but at some point we all have to give in to "financial restraints".

kapkomet
OK.. I thought I was going crazy with all this "all we need is a #5 talk..." Sorry to rain on the happy Sox parade, but it's true. E-lo as a #1 starter in the play offs? MB? Scho? Garland? 'Cuse me while I :puke Over the course of the season, they can hold their own. But against the best rotations in baseball in the playoffs, they can't hold a candle to any of the teams' #1 and #2. So, really, yes, we need a #1 that pushes back everyone one slot. Someone that can pitch 3 games in a ALCS and win you 2 of three and everyone else pitches in the other 2 wins. Right now, I have no faith that any of these guys on the current staff that will start 3 games in a 7 game series in the playoffs and be effective... I, for one, would be happy to find out how these guys would fare in the playoffs because that means the Sox would have GOTTEN THERE. And before anyone starts with the "oh, you're just happy to get there?" business, you DO have to get there before you can advance, and I'm not going to put the cart before the horse. Do I like our 1 through 3 pitchers? Yes. Would I like a better #1 to push our current 1-3 down to 2-4? Yes. Do I think the Sox will get a better #1 ( or even a #2 ) to do that? No. Given the situation and the well-documented "financial restraints", the most I expect is a trade for a #4 or 5 guy at best. Anything more than that would be a VERY WELCOME surprise....come on Kenny and Jerry.....SURPRISE ME!!!

It was worth a shot to try Cotts but he is simply not stretched out and burning the bullpen is not the best idea. The options on the farm are Rauch and Munoz. Grilli has control problems and I'd be really surprised if he got the call. I'd be a little wary of throwing Munoz in there, he is just getting his feet wet in terms of starting. Either way, they've got to do something.
