Livan Hernandez Article

From Barry Rozner from the Daily Herald,

Steve Finley would be nice, and Ichiro might be nicer.

The team will need a closer, but first things first: The White Sox need a veteran starter, and Montreal has the perfect guy.

White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, chairman of Major League Baseball's relocation committee, should get with Expos owner Bud Selig and tell his pal to relocate Livan Hernandez to the South Side of Chicago before the bidding war begins in earnest.

The Expos haven't been this bad for four years, and the auction isn't far off.

Hernandez is only 29 but seems like he has been around forever already. Maybe that's because he was NLCS and World Series MVP as a rookie in 1997 when he was 4-0 in the postseason.

He has pitched in the playoffs three times and the World Series twice, and in the last four years he has averaged 14 wins and 229 innings.

This season, despite the Expos' awful start, Hernandez is 3-3 with a 2.96 ERA in 10 starts and a major-league leading 73 innings (2 complete games). He has thrown very well in 8 of his 10 starts and should have 6 or 7 victories.

Hernandez signed a three-year extension this spring that will pay him a very reasonable $8 million in 2005 and 2006, followed by $7 million in 2007.

He also knocked his 2004 salary from $6 million to $4 million when he inked the new contract, meaning the Sox' portion for this year would be only $2.6 million if they brought him in today.

Hernandez fits in as one of your top three starters and would make you feel better long term about Jon Garland and Scott Schoeneweis at the end of the rotation.

White Sox general manger Kenny Williams fleeced the Expos once already in the Bartolo Colon deal.

Time to do it again.

Swap meet

The flea market also is about to begin in Kansas City, perhaps by June 1, and here are several players the Cubs or the White Sox may want to look at:

Center fielder Carlos Beltran, shortstop Angel Berroa, catcher Benito Santiago, infielder Tony Graffanino, outfielder Matt Stairs and relievers Jason Grimsley and Scott Sullivan.

Catch this

White Sox fans can play catch in the outfield during the 2004 Yard Sale on June 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Advance reservations are required - (312) 674-5121 - and space is limited to 500 fans per hour session.

Besides Family Field Day, fans also can shop at the annual Garage Sale, featuring new, used and autographed equipment from current and former players.

Just Skilling

Bernie Lincicome of the Rocky Mountain News: "They might be able to predict hurricanes and tornadoes, but meteorologists have been unable to explain why the air is thinner at Coors Field more often in the top of an inning.''

Just passing

From CBS' Craig Kilborn: "To avoid the embarrassment of ordering the Lingerie Football League, it will show up on your cable bill labeled 'porn.'æ''

Best quote

Arizona manager Bob Brenly, on Giants fans' frustration at never getting to see Barry Bonds bat: "It's his fault for being so good.''

And finally ...

Comedian Alex Kaseberg on Jessica Simpson singing the national anthem at the Indy 500: "Asked to comment, Jessica said, 'Normally, I perform to larger crowds, but it will be good to sing to just 500 people.'æ''

He would be a perfect fit. He would come relatively cheap for the next 3 yrs. Hes been in the majors forever and hes only 29 and we know how much Ozzie likes latin players. I personally would rather have him than Freddy Garcia.

Livan Hernandez... :sleep

Please wake me when you have someone I actually want...And who doesn't have a contract like Livan's (like 6 million a year for his "tub o goo" ass)

Until then...

No on Livian. If Livian hadn't signed for three years, maybe. If he were a 1 year rental like Garcia then yes. The risk is too great on a guy the Sox haven't seen pitch or been part of the clubhouse. They could get stuck with a big salary for 2 more years on an unknown. No thanks.

So lets throw the rest of our farm system in the rotation and see them fail would you like that better? We need a good arm, not only to win the central but to go further...

Please look at our record for the fifth starter since the beginning of 2003. Then pretend the 5th starter went .500 (I know wishful thinking but we are well over .500 when 1-4 start in that same time frame) and recalculate our record. We would be up by about 5 games in the division this year and would have won it last year.

How good would Kenny Rogers have been for us the last two years, and he is well over a .500 pitcher.

On top of all of this, how overworked is the bullpen due to the fact that every time the 5th starter pitches, four of them will be used. Also, our starters never get an extra day of rest and therefore are being overworked. 5 days rest would be helpful from time to time.

I agree, a 5th starter is needed. Just because I'm not sold on Hernandez doesn't mean I don't recognize the need. Livian has a 3 yr contract worth something like $24 mill. As he's pitched a ton of innings, and who knows his real age, he could break down any day.

I'd rather the Sox get a one year rental, or tops a guy with a two year contract.

Well it's obvious the guy was a fluke {Think Mike Caruso}.

The fact is the are stuck with a contract on a guy that will never be as good as his rookie year.

The GM in KC is just a dumbass.

:dips***

Your saying this, and the guy is only 25 years old? That's like saying Crede is not as good as he was his rookie year. Give these guys some time.

I wouldn't mind Livan at all. The fact that he is on 3 contract is a plus in my book. Loaiza could walk after this season and he's "probably" older than Hernandez, to boot. Going into next year with Buehrle, Garland, Schoney, Hernandez and probably Cotts would not be too shabby.
