Jeremy Sowers

I just watched Sowers dominate SEC East Champion Georgia, 7-0. About 50-75 scouts were on hand with radar guns out watching this lefty.

His line was:

ip h r er bb so

Jeremy Sowers 9.0 3 0 0 0 10

He threw an 88-89 mph fastball with real good movement that he can throw on both sides of the plate. He also has a sharp breaking curveball that registered around 880-81. He threw several nice changeups, but I never saw a gun reading on those.

I know the Sox have little chance of getting this kid because it is doubtful he will fall that far, but I thought some of you might like a report, esp. aboz since he is from Louisville.

This is what BA says about him, personally I don't know if we need another lefty, but again we have room to draft on luxury.

"After three years, Sowers and the draft meet again, and he's ready to sign this time. The Reds picked Sowers 20th overall in 2001 out of Louisville's Ballard High but made little attempt to sign him, and he honored his Vanderbilt commitment. Sowers has been the Commodores' No. 1 starter for three seasons, and Southeastern Conference teams have tried to attack him by swinging early in the count. It's the best approach against this slender, efficient strike-throwing machine. Sowers pounds the zone with four pitches: an accurate, active fastball he throws anywhere from 85-91 mph, a solid-average slider and curveball, and a changeup with good movement that he uses sparingly. His consistency and makeup impress scouts nearly as much as his stuff and command. Sowers' twin brother Josh pitches at Yale with similar pitches and command from the right side."

For whatever reason I've had a feeling for a while that Sowers will fall to the Sox.

Sowers won't fall to the Sox...He is from about 5 to 10 mins from my house and some of my family is fairly good friends with his step-dad...They talk from time to time and from all indications he will be a top 10 pick...Great kid though. Would love to have him, but I just don't see it happening.

Speaking of another lefty, what do you guys think of someone like JP Howell with one of the early picks. He pitched good for Texas and this year was moved to the rotatoin.

He's a slim statured lefty, but I figure worse case you draft him, notice he can't start in the majors, move him to the pen and he could quickly move up to the majors.

Personally I'm a huge fan of college pitchers and I think Howell could be a guy that slides and could be had with one of the 2nd round picks.

Here is another guy I like...seems like he may be there when the SOx pick too.

Justin Orenduff from Virginia Commonwealth. Guy has great stuff and a good build. Features a good fastball and slider and a developing changeup.

Zach Jackson from Texas A&M is a good lefty that projects to be there when the Sox pick in the 1st as well.

I'm really starting to like JP Howell and Suzuki in the 2nd if both are there.
