hammerhead johnson
Boers: I am as dumb as a box of rocks, Hawk, but I do know a little something about baseball after all of these years. Hawk: I have friends who have forgotten more blah blah blah

hammerhead johnson
It all ended on a positive note, however. Hawk praised his basketball and football knowledge.
IlliniKrush
So all in all, Hawk wasn't talking about the fans but he was talking about the media. I don't understand how the fans know something but the media don't. At some level, aren't media people really just fans? Oh yeah, Bernstein would have loved this one. BrandoFan
Hawk: Me and you go way back [and you still don't know jack s***] Boers: Yeah, all the way back to your GM days... Hawk: {preetends he didn't hear the last part]
BrandoFan
Oh yeah, Bernstein would have loved this one Luckily for Hawk Bernstein wasn't around because he would have have effortlessly destroyed Hawk - Boers is a weakaroo.
keninem
I heard it on TV and while I like Hawk, took it as a slap in the face as well.. what he said almost word for word was "People that have never played baseball come up and tell me they have been watching this game for 20 years and know a little something about how it's played, and I just think, you don't know a damn thing." I like to think I know a little something about baseball, and there's no doubt in my head that some people here on Sox Talk do. Maybe he didn't mean it the way it sounded, but it did come out horrible.
marsh
the exchange wasn't hateful though, by the end they were both laughing. it's pretty obvious that hawk has some "issues" with certain members of the media. although i don't think it's fair to lump boers and bernsy in with a mariotti. that's fightin words right there. hawk even admitted that he listened to the show and said that they're funny, they just don't know baseball. hawk made it very clear he was talking about the certain media guys and not the fans, although i don't think he made that clear with his statements during the game. i'm sure this will come up tonite during the pre-game or game. i love hawk, and i like listening to boers and bernsy. but honestly i take what they say with a grain of salt. hawk is a homer, i like that. b & b have to come up with things to talk about for four hours. given the nature of their respective jobs where everything you say can and will be broadcast over and over and over, you are going to trip up every now and again. anyway, the whole thing was great radio, i only wish bernstien was there as well. Like I said, Hawk went on to say that he has been in the business of baseball professionally for 45 years, and still doesn't know anything about the game. He was speaking more more to the vastness, and uniqueness to the game.
IlliniKrush
Hawk didn't mean fans. He apologized today for not being clear about that. Regardless, even if he's only talking about the media (which i don't see how he can only mean media but not the fans) i think he's wrong. Anyone that's watched the game long enough or played it at a level of oh, maybe high school or higher could know a lot about the game. Hawk is trying to make baseball sound way more complicated than it actually is. A game that 'the people' just can't understand.
hammerhead johnson
Luckily for Hawk Bernstein wasn't around because he would have have effortlessly destroyed Hawk - Boers is a weakaroo. Boers is very, very sharp though when it comes to snappy comebacks. I think that he got the best of Hawk. But you're right about Bernstein. He is about as smart as they come. zach61
What I got from what Hawk said last night was that people think they know the game of baseball within the baseball world, but unless you played at the major league level, you don't know what major league baseball is. You can understand the game and know the rules and all that, but you can't know what it's like to be a major league player unless you were there. BigNDfan80
How did this turn into a big deal? Hawk was talking about how the Rangers were now better WITHOUT ARod, but you would think (since ARod is considered the best player in baseball) that they would be better WITH him. He said that's what so great about the game of baseball. You can spend a lifetime around it and still never figure it out. How it got turned into...the fans don't know anything about the game..I have no idea.

Steff
Just heard the replay from last night... and even though they may have edited it to sound worse I don't think he was intentionally insulting the fans. They are going to replay the conversation with Terry and Hawk at 5 for those that missed it.

RibbieRubarb
I listen to Boers and Bernsie at work every day, and I can't recall them being as negative as Mariotti. In fact, I think they are more positive about the Sox than most on that Station. Was there a specific incident that Hawk is referring to? I remember them being REALLY hard on the Wrigley Field crowd after the shooting and defeding the Bridgeport area and saying it's safer at the Cell. Dan Bernstein, btw, is an admitted White Sox fan. BrandoFan
Hawk admitted to being addicted to O'Reilly Factor Game. Set. Match.....as far as "right mindset" and "intelligence" go.
BrandoFan
Anyone that's watched the game long enough or played it at a level of oh, maybe high school or higher could know a lot about the game. It took me about a week to learn all the "complexities" and "vastness" of baseball. Hawk's tirade was pure nonsense - the kind of irrelevant jock tripe you hear in those circles. Calling Boers and Mariotti out? Petty and unprofessional - it was cool during Soxfest, now it's just creepy. "There's nobody that knows the game of baseball no matter how long you've been in the game" Whoa, deeeep.....
