YASNY
He had some clutch hits last year, but I also remember him looking terrible at some times. I dont think he fits in with the Sox, I dont think they have a roster spot that they want to give to another 1b, and I dont think they want to lose Gload who is a left handed bat who can play 1b and the outfield. If I had to chose today Gload or Simon, I would chose Gload. SB I agree. I'm not infatuated with the likes of Randall Simon.
witesoxfan
What about Willie, Marte and Olivo? I also think Politte will be ok in the long run. When he had his slider earlier in the year, he made the batters look foolish. Other good ones I just basically touched on those that we got this past offseason Of course you can include Willie, Marte, and Olivo...we got Willie for Chris Singleton, and I think he's in Pittsburgh now...got Marte for Matt Guerrier, and he's now in Minnesota...and we got Olivo for Chad Bradford, and he's the only one we've dealt that has had good success, and I like Olivo over him anyways. However, for every Willie Harris, there is always a Ryan Kohlmeier. You gotta deal with those too.

qwerty
Randall Simon is being cut for a reason. He sucks. Really, then why is he a career .295 hitter???
witesoxfan
So what did Kohlmeier cost us? Not much. He was either a FA signing or a waiver claim. Now that I think of it, another good low-risk, high-reward guy is Grilli. Rule V draft pick, and while I haven't seen him pitch, I've heard some good things about him. If he can come through for us, we are looking good. I don't even recall what he cost us though.
hammerhead johnson
Really, then why is he a career .295 hitter??? I don't think that Benny did much homework on this one. I'd get him strictly for pinch hitting. He never strikes out.

Kohlmeier was a shot in the dark. You can't count this as a negative against KW. Loiaza was also a shot in the dark, that payed off. These are very minimal risk, potentially high reward type of transactions. A GM would be stupid not to take a few shots like this. Kohlmeier is still in the organization, right? That can't even be consider a failure yet as he might still help this team at some point. Grilli also. Robert Person could have been a big siging, but he came up with an injury. Tough break, but again, minimal risk.

To be a successful small-payroll team(though the Sox are middle of the pack or so), you have to get diamond in the rough type players like that. And I do believe he is still in the organization. If he can figure it out, it was a good pickup. The only moves I get pissed at are those where it is high-risk, high-reward, or high-risk, low-reward, and the risk becomes a problem(as in Paul Konerko of last year, and Billy Koch)
