Sox Lean Towards Position Players on 2nd Day

2nd Day of Draft Continues

By Danny Santaromita

After 14 of the Sox 22 picks on the 1st day were pitchers, six of the first ten picks on the 2nd day have been position players. Players slip through the cracks every year and end up being picked in the 2nd day, if even picked at all, and find their way to the Majors. The Sox are looking to find such steals this year. The 2nd day includes round 19 through the end of the draft (round 50).

Following 3B Caleb Cooper in round 19 the Sox went after three high schoolers in a row. Michael Dubee, who went in the 20th round, is a 6'2" RHP out of Riverview High School. After Dubee the Sox took Brian Flores, a LHP out of Carlsbad High School in New Mexico. Carlsbad has produced many professional baseball players including former first rounder Shane Andrews. In all 15 players have been drafted from there, ten since 1990. Flores has been playing varsity all four years and was part of a 2002 State Championship. Through 26 games this year Flores has an ERA of 1.35 with 35 strikeouts and 8 walks. 21st rounder Matt Mansillo is a SS out of the American Heritage School. He has a solid verbal to Ohio University so signability could be an issue.

Other picks include:

Derek McNeil, St. Leo Col., SS R/R 5'11" 185

Joshua Hansen, U San Diego, C R/R 5'10" 215

Justin Sincock, Millikan HS, RHP R/R 6'9" 210

Daniel Jordan, Gulliver Prep, 3B R/R 6'0" 190

Logan Williamson, Pensacola JC, LHP L/L 6'0" 190

Gregory Young, Delaware Tech, CC CF R/R 6'2" 190

Frank Viola, Florida CC, RHP R/R 6'4" 188
