Putin Takes Bush's Side Against Democrats on Iraq

At the same time, Putin forged a strong friendship with Bush by offering immediate support in the global fight against terrorism. Both men go out of their way now to avoid criticizing each other publicly.

Could you imagine a Russian leader supporting and defending Reagan?

It makes perfect sense. Putin wants to be able to go in and crush rebellion in Chechnyia (I know I butchered the spelling) and doesn't want to have American opinion against him, so he is framing his problems just like Bush is in Iraq and Afganistan...IE a war on terror.

I think you hit it on the head. At the same time, how far do you think the goodwill is going to go if Putin does tthe right thing and ratifies Kyoto, bringing it into force and forcing compliance despite Bush's monumental efforts to crush it? Putin is under enormous pressure from us and from many powers in Russia NOT to sign, and that he is still considering signing on is to his credit, at least on this one issue.
