Moneyball

I read it and enjoyed it.  Best book I've ever read, then again, I don't read many books, so take that for what it's worth...

Same with me. My favorite book easily. Granted its the only book I have ever read not involved with school. I loved it and I don't like reading.

Anyone know any similar books which would be good reads? I'll check out JD's book, but anyone got any others?

Thanks guys.

Billy Beane seems to be applying to baseball what Jack Welch applied to GE. Moneyball sounds like the Six Sigma of MLB.

Anybody have any idea what I just said?

In terms of reading, if you like humor and science fiction, give the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy a shot. It's pretty funny (in the British sort of way). My Avatar is from the cover art. You can pick up the entire 5 book trilogy in a single volume at Barnes and Noble for like $15.

MJ's book isn't bad, either. It's this little smallish one, "I can't accept not trying" or something like that was the title. Payton's book is good, too, "Never Die Easy."

Updated Historical Abstract by Bill James

Bunts by George F. Will

Nothing fancy-schmancy, which is why I liked them. Informative.

i read moneyball and i thought it was excellent, although it is a little over the top on promoting billy beane as a genius...Never Die Easy is also an excellent book. I actually enjoy reading Bill James' Baseball Abstracts, i have a couple from the mid 80s, i guess i just get off on all that statistical garbage.

I also read MoneyBall, and Loved it. But after I read it, I kinda realized how much it made Bean sound like he was god, and everyone else was an idiot. Just wait till the big 3 are gone and then we will see if he is really a genius.

Trust me Beane has guys already lined up in the minors to fill those shoes.

One of them being Joe Blanton...yes the same Joe Blanton the Sox SHOULD have selected instead of Royce Ring.

That still kills me. Ring, a reliever, over Blanton? What the hell Kenny? :stick

I've read moneyball, and it was an excellent read. Like some people have said, it paints Beane as being God-like, but it's good nonetheless

If you like high school football at all (or if you like high school sports at all), i highly recommend Friday Night Lights. One of my favorites.

I didn't care so much for Bunts, but George Will's other book - Men at Work -while somewhat dated, is one of the best baseball books I have ever read.

The Mental Game of Baseball is also an excellent read.

Moneyball was a good read. I enjoyed it, but it is a Beane worship.

If you want a little historical perspective on baseball, try "Veeck As In Wreck" by Bill Veeck and "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton. "Ball Four" is an excellent book mostly set in 1969 when Bouton was a pitcher with the Seattle Pilots, with flashbacks to his Yankee days as well. I highly recommend it.

Hardballtimes.com just happened to do a piece checking in on the "Moneyball" draft class today.  Check it out.

Thanks for that article Cheat, besides Blanton, Swisher and Teahan, the Moneyball draft looks like a bust for the A's. I'm prob goin to order Moneyball for my B-Day since I've never seen it down here. ;)
