Maggs will not be traded no matter what this year . If he leaves at end of year KW says "Then So be it".

White Sox general manager Ken Williams said Friday that even if contract talks with Magglio Ordonez break off—and not even Ordonez will say they have—the All-Star outfielder will not be traded.

"Magglio's not going anywhere," Williams said. "We're trying to win this thing."

But if Ordonez stays for the rest of the season, the Sox could lose him this winter for nothing but draft choices.

"Then so be it," Williams said.

A couple of things I liked about these statements:

1) KW's #1 job is to win this year. Admittedly, he needs to consider next year, but his first priority has to be this year. I'm glad to see that he's not going to trade Maggs (unless, I suppose, the Sox fall out of contention before the trade deadline). The 14 mill and the draft choices are compensation enough for next year.

2) I was suspicious about the earlier article that had no direct quotes from Maggs but multiple quotes from unnamed sources. It's good to hear Van Dyke say that Maggs will not say that negotiations have broken down.

I'm with that.  If we're gonna do some damage this year WE NEED,  Maggs.  If he leaves at the end of the year will get some draft picks and have 14 million bucks to spend on other needs.

I agree. Besides, the way we've been drafting, I wouldn't mind the picks at all. Especially with the benefit of going for it all this year. We may lose some of our farm in trying to acquire good talent for a WS run, so the draft picks may very well be needed.
