They were 5 outs away from going to and most likely winning the World Series last year, and you still don't take them seriously.  All they did this past offseason was get a damn good 1Bman, add Todd Walker, sign LaTroy Hawkins, and get Greg Maddux.

 

They won something like 90 games with Shawn Estes as their #5 with Matt Clement struggling most of the year.  Clement has figured his s*** out, Zambrano is filthy, Wood and Prior are dominant, and Maddux is a solid pitcher.  If they add another reliever, they could be the team to beat in the NL.

 

You know what that means.  Time for us to get another starter, a stud reliever, and Steve Finley, and watch Oz-ball take form.  Watch us get the clutch hits that are needed to be gotten, and get the huge pitching performances when our backs are up against the wall.

 

And to this day, I still think a Cubs-White Sox World Series would be great for baseball, but terrible for the city of Chicago...like literally.  You consider how heated the Cubs-Sox rivalry is with just interleague play, imagine if it actually meant that one of the streaks would be broken.  In-f***ing-tense.

The 1986 Red Sox were ONE OUT away from a WORLD SERIES TITLE against the Mets and they LOST. Them gettin that close didn't mean a damn thing for them in 1987, DID IT? I don't care that the Cubs were 5 outs away from a world series, THEY LOST. As far as their off-season additions, that's all fine and dandy. The Cubs aren't the only team to make decent off-season additions. It doesn't guranteee a damn thing though. As far as the Cubs winning 90 gms. That's false. They won 88 to be exact. 3 less than the WILD card Marlins. Proving that they took advantage of a WEAK division. Not to forget that they were aided by a sissy, cupcake schedule the last 3 and a half weeks of the season that consisted of the Pirates, Reds, and Brewers. You could make a damn good argument that if Roy Oswalt had been healthy and made 30 plus starts that they and not the Cubs would have won the central last year. Lets not forget the Cubs won the division by ONE GAME.

 

Even with all that said i'm not saying the Cubs don't have the potential to be really good. But, seeing is believing. There's not one team in the national league that anybody can say is a powerhouse right now. You may say the Cubs have had a lot of injuries, and that's true. But, if you're into the Cubs as much as you seem you would know that they've lost a lot of gms they could've won regardless of the injuries due to mainly the inabilty to come through in clutch rbi situations. Something that the really good teams do 80-85% of the time.

 

When the Cubs get 15-20 gms above .500 then you can come back and tell me how wrong I was for not giving them as much credit as you think they deserve.

And they got better in 2004......If Prior, Wood, Sosa, Walker and Co were all healthy, Cubs would be 15 games over .500 right now. Hell, they are AHEAD of the Astros as it as.

 

Now they just need a lot of bad recurring injuries and hopefully they never reach their full potential and miss the playoffs.

Ok..1st of all. You need to stop with this lame ass "the only way to stop the Cubs is to hope they have a bunch of injuries". That's just retarded right there. I'm not gonna wish injuries on ANYBODY. As far as Prior missing a month. The Cubs still had Wood, Zambrano, and Clement to hold down the fort. Other than Wade Miller, Who did the Astro's have last year? Oswalt missing 10-15 starts was critical and was no doubt the difference in the Cubs winning the division. As far as Sosa goes they more then held their own while he was out. I'm not sure what their record was but I know it was over. 500. The Cubs were a whopping 3 gms above .500 going into September. They end up 14 gms over. With a schedule that consisted basically of the Reds, Pirates, and Brewers. Just coincidence? I didn't think so. The nl central was flat out bad. The Marlins won 91 gms as a wild card. That's all you really need to know.

 

As far as the Cubs and Marlins series goes. I could care less about Bartman, Gonzalez, Harry Carry, God, the goat or whatever. They blew a 3-1 lead with the last 2 gms at home. They CHOKED. End of story. They're not the 1st team to CHOKE and they won't be the last. But, bottomline is they CHOKED

 

As far as them being better in 2004. I'll take a wait and see approach. YOu can blame the Cub injuies all you want. They've lost a s***load of gms they could've won regardless of injuries. Oh yeah. As far as your if they had had Lofton and Ramirez all year. Did u forget that they only reason they traded for Lofton was because PATTERSON GOT HURT.
