Josh Fields on the Score

He said he was gonna pay his parents house off with his bonus money. He took their joking well. He's going to Winston Salem tomorrow. He said he has hit with wood bats before, thinks his biggest adjustment will be to experiment with various companies' bats, hopes to find one that's the closest to a metal bat (???), said football was not something he's even thinking about. Baseball was always foremost in his plans. DIdn't want to get clobbered on a daily basis. He's 6 foot 2, 215 pounds. Said he's built a llittle thicker than pro quarterback types. His first love was baseball his dad was always his baseball coach. Played basketball thru sophmore high school. His mom was the basketball coach.

He was a fan of baseball growing up, watched it growing up, rather than Smurfs and scooby doo. He was watching SportsCenter. Grew up rooting for Oklahoma guys like Robin and Pete Incaviglia.

When asked about his glovework, he said his fielding % is .949, range is "not a speedster" but he'll take the shots off his chest and throw it across. "I just jump in front of anything" brings a football approach to that, and to taking a fastball off his back.

Arm strength? He said I guess the football helps a little, I have an ok arm, I normally get the guys out at first, he said.

Sounded like a level headed kid, nice guy

Brief summary as they talk:

Says they've treated him "pretty fair" in terms of the bonus he received

He is going to pay his parents house off with his money

They are joking about buying some "bling" with his money

He has hit with a wood bat before...once he starts playing he's going to experiment with different bats and hopefully find one that suits him well...says the adjustment from metal to wood is pretty significant because you can't just swing as hard as possible anymore with metal, hoping for home runs

Football...asked how closely he has monitored other 2 sport athletes and their paths...Fields says he has looked at them, but they are not him...he could fall back on football but it's "not even in his head" and wants to "give baseball his best shot"

If he fails to succeed he'll just "keep on trying"

He doesn't have the prototypical QB body, he says. He's 6'2" and not 6'5". Some people tried to turn him into a free safety out of high school. His first love was baseball, his dad was a baseball coach. Football started in 7th grade. He played basketball through sophomore year of HS. His mom is a bball coach.

How big of a fan are you of the game? Bernstein is disappointed in young players' recognition of baseball history, etc. Fields says he is a fan of the game, he has been watching SC since he was a kid, grew up around athletics, always wanted to play professionally, he's very passionate about it. He grew up rooting for ventura, incavaglia, and rooted for their pro teams. Sox, texas, said some st. louis because they are close.

How is your glove? Fields says he was .949%. He says he is not a speedster. Says he is good at blocking the ball at third base, jumps in front of a lot of things. He doesn't mind being hit (part of what came out in football)

How is your arm strength? It should be up, it's an "ok arm you could say", he doesn't throw extremely hard but usually gets the guys out at first base.

Boers warns him about getting to Winston-Salem, they congratulate him, that's about it

I typed that as they spoke, sorry if some of this doesn't make sense. Hope this helps for those of you who couldn't listen.

They were really going at him. I wish they wouldn't do that with every new guy. The only interviews with them that are fun are when they know the guy they are interviewing.

They were fine with him. They busted his chops a little, but Fields took, and laughed it off. Exactly what anyone should do when dealing with those two.

They are just a couple of immature sophmoric jokesters. That's why they are funny.
