Boston 'too racist' for Bonds

Recommended Posts

Why should Bonds care how he is seen in the community..? As a matter of fact.. it's obvious over the years that he doesn't.

Responsibility...? C'mon.. he didn't yell "fire" in a theater.. he said he's heard Boston is a racist town. I've been there. He's right. It is.

Why should Bond care? Because he is in a position to help change. His words will be listened to and analysed from both sides, something that others cannot say.

Would you agree that Mayor Daley or President Bush have to be more guarded in what they say?

Statistically Chicago is a racist town too. Institutional racism is very strong in chicago.

1999-

The average per-capita income was $29,043 for whites, but $15,272 for African Americans, $12,680 for Latinos

In Chicago, the official unemployment rate for persons of color was 11.5 percent, but 3.3 percent for whites.

In 2001, according to an ACORN study, African Americans were denied mortgages five times as often whites, while Latinos were turned down two and a half times more than whites.

Although African Americans are less than 20 percent of the population of the wider Chicago metropolitan area, they constitute more than half the homeless.

In the Chicago area, 29 percent of non-elderly Latinos do not have health insurance, a figure which drops to 24 percent for African Americans, and only 10 percent for whites

Sixty-three percent of people incarcerated by the state of Illinois for all crimes are African American, 36 percent are white and 11 percent are Latino.

Barry can say what he wants about Boston, but racism and institutional racism are alive and well all over the country. I doubt his comments help the problem though.

Compare Bonds to the Mayor or the President..? You can't be serious? When Bonds represents thousands/millions of people with his words and actions I'll consider the importance of him watching his mouth. ;)

Well Bonds can't do much worse at healing racism than the mayors of many cities. See my last post in this thread...someone needs to do something. But it takes more than words, and casting negative images about cities. Actually helping people might work too barry

Represent? No. Influences? Yes. You are correct, there are a hell of a lot more people that care what Bonds says. Witness all the people who are talking about his comments. With popularity, credibility, power, or influence, comes responsibility.

Dr. King was not an elected representitive. Do you think he just shot out whatever he felt like saying? That would diminish his message. Nadar hasn't been elected to anything, yet his words have impact. There are many examples of people who have influence without direct power.

I'm not agreeing with or disagreeing with what Bonds said. I am only making the point that professional ballplayers are ambassadors for their teams and their cities. That may not be constitutional, it may not be correct, but that's reality. People listen when they speak. They need to weigh their words and be mindful of the consequences.

When Bonds can say something and someone cares as much as when Steff or Texsox tells somebody, than it's the same. Until then he's a public figure and needs to accept that responsibility.

And from the reaction what he said is getting it's apparent that most find him to be FOS (i.e.. "Oh look.. Barry running his mouth again") and take his words worth a grain of salt. I just think too much is/was made of this. And I think further that the reactions (OD, hope his dick falls off, etc..) are interesting and say a lot about the people saying them. JMO.

Barry Bonds' entire career has been a tree falling in the forest for me.

Never liked him, never paid much attention to him.

Whether he breaks Aaron's record or not makes no difference to me - Aaron will ALWAYS have my respect, and Bonds won't.

I remember getting excited as a kid to watch Aaron play in All-Star Games and on the Saturday "Game Of The Week". Any time I've seen Bonds play has been accidental.

You specifically called out my statement and then proceeded to say 'it says alot about the people that say them.'  I can read between the lines.

Get the eye doctor Queen ;) . I think my actions are well enough known around here that if I wanted to call someone a scumbag, I would.

And to correct myself, it says very little. The insistant hatred for Bonds over stupid comments he's made is comical. Forget what good things the guy does, and focus on the bad. IMO, at worst it makes folks guilty of being closed minded. Hardly a scumbag.

Now I am just a close-minded person because I happen to disagree with you. Whatever. I'm done with this thread.

And what my opinion of your comments on THIS matter are is what you are. :huh

Funny "disagreement" comment. I disagree with yous (and others) assment of the situation and I just say I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Yet your response was a tad bit hostile (IMO) and assuming (incorrectly) and I get the "eyeroll".

Yea.. whatever. :headshake
