Honel and Pacheco Return to Action

Kris Honel returns from injury

By Danny Santaromita

Kris Honel, the White Sox 1st round pick in 2001, made his long awaited return to the mound today as he pitched one inning of relief. Honel has been out since opening day when he left after 4 innings due to soreness in his shoulder. Originally it seemed Honel would only miss one or two starts, but that turned into over 2 months. Joining Honel in returning today for the Barons was Enemencio Pacheco. Pacheco was acquired from Colorado for Sandy Alomar Jr. in 2002. Pacheco walked 2 in 2.1 innings of hitless ball while Honel only allowed one baserunner, a walk, in one inning. Both pitchers came out of the bullpen. The Barons lost the game 4-2 in the final game of the first half of the season.

Last season in 24 starts and 6 relief appearances Pacheco had a 2.56 ERA with a 12-2 record with the Barons. The 25 year-old started the season with Charlotte and in 18.2 innings of work, most of it out of the bullpen, he had an 0-1 record with a 4.82 ERA. Last year the 21 year-old Honel had a 3.11 ERA in 24 starts at Winston-Salem and made two starts at Birmingham posting a 3.75 ERA there.

The Birmingham Barons have been decimated with pitching injuries this season. Ryan Wing has been out the whole season. Kris Honel got injured opening day. The original rotation this season was Honel, Arnie Munoz, Ryan Meaux, Tetsu Yofu, and Heath Phillips. Ryan Wing would have been part of the rotation, but his injury has prevented that. Since then Munoz saw a horrific start for the White Sox and has since been sent down to Charlotte. Ryan Meaux was moved to the bullpen after early season struggles. Yofu was promoted to Charlotte. Add Honel's injury to that list and the Barons have had to scramble for starters. Jim Bullard, Dennis Ulacia, and Eduardo Villacis among others have been forced into the rotation. Finally some relief is on the way as Kris Honel and Enemencio Pacheco have joined the team.
