Viruses? Get a Mac.....We've been running them for 8 years, not a virus yet.

How long til I get flamed for this?

It is nice to know that the platform has such a small user base that hackers and virus writers won't bother with it. Worry when more people decide to buy a Mac and someone decided to write the first Mac Attack.

Access Point - Device that allows wireless-equipped computers and other devices to communicate with a wired network. Also used to expand the range of a wireless network.

Router - A networking device that connects multiple networks together, such as a local network and the Internet.

You probably do not need an access point. All you will need is a router between your internet modem and your primary desktop PC and a wireless card for any laptops, other desktops, etc. on the network.

If I was to get this router and card, I would only need the one card for the upstairs computer, right? The downstairs computer could still be hooked up through Ethernet? I think that would be the case, but I just want to make sure.

Without knowing exactly what is on the downstairs computer, that sounds correct. Remember if you are going to share the printer on the downstairs 'puter it must be on.
