jasonxctf
Cotts isnt getting it done anymore. I think his ERA is 5.96 now. Maybe it's due to him having to start that one game... who knows. He's just been horrible over the past 2 months. Anyone else think it's time to send him back to AAA to get his head on straight?
Wedge
We could... but then we'd be down another guy in the pen. Hopefully he can put together a good outing and build off of it. That's about our only option right now...
Dick Allen
It is probably time, the problem is there is no one to bring up who you could be reasonably confident of getting the job done.
Al Lopez Ghost (old)
He makes a lot of bad pitches that wind up in the bleachers. But he's very young and has a pretty good arm. I doubt that there's anyone in the minors, at least lefthanded, that would be a better choice. I say keep him, and suffer the growing pains. Wedge
Maybe we need to use Adkins more?
Cali
What are Cotts' numbers as a reliever this season?
Al Lopez Ghost (old)
Cotts in relief: 23.2 Inning 19 hits 13 earned runs 4 homers 13 walks 20 strike outs about a 4.55 era

Texsox
I just hope the loss of that sterling example of relief excellence, Billy Koch, doesn't adversly affect him.
Yoda
The only reliable pitchers I see are Shingo and Marte. Maybe we need to use Adkins more? I forgot all about that guy
Sox1422
I agree. Send him down and bring Wunsch up.
Rex Hudler
I agree. Send him down and bring Wunsch up. Wunsch is done with the Sox. He is no longer on their 40-man roster and is also on the disabled list.
Hatchetman
OK. Cotts has much better "stuff" than I imagined when he was in the minors. In AA, what really stood out was his ability to not give up the long ball. In the majors, that's probably his biggest weakness. His control is really lacking, not just talking about walks, but pitches in the strike zone too. The place for a guy with shaky control and gopheritis is not as a specialty reliever IMO. I think he should be down in AAA as a STARTER. If he can get his arm stretched out and get his control back, he could be useful to us in the second half of the year. Bring up Jose Santiago who is a proven mediocre major leaguer.
Wedge
Wunsch is done with the Sox. He is no longer on their 40-man roster and is also on the disabled list. Really? I forgot how this all worked. I wish they'd bring him back, he's better than Jackson and Politte, at least. OK. Cotts has much better "stuff" than I imagined when he was in the minors. Unfortunately, we don't even really have "warm bodies" in the pen if we do that.
Sox1422
Wunsch is done with the Sox. He is no longer on their 40-man roster and is also on the disabled list. I didn't hear that he was off the 40 man roster or on the DL for that matter. Thanks for the update.
thomsonmi
I've heard this stuff about Wunsch being in the doghouse all year. What did he do? He was almost unhittable at times last year, along with Marte.
Wedge
Isn't he the player's union rep? Maybe that's part of it?
T R U
dude Neal Cotts doesnt even look good... have you seen his picture on MVP Baseball 2004?.... yisa
Xero
It is the 5th starter curse...look at his numbers before his 5th start
striker
I think Cotts pitch selection is bad. Most the homeruns I've seen him give up are off his fastball, which is only like 91mph. He needs to get his change up bad and utilize his curveball more.
HuskyCaucasian
Hey on MVP Baseball last night, he went 10 innings and gave up only 1 run in a 2-1 victory over the A's. He had a shut out until the bottom of the ninth when he gave up a solo homer to straight away center with 2 houts.
flippedoutpunk
the bottom of the ninth when he gave up a solo homer to straight away center with 2 houts. Yep that just about sounds like Neal Cotts. I dont care what we do with this guy as long as we dont bring up any of our 87 mph fastball-throwing minor leaguers.
Gene Honda Civic
This thread is no doubt in response to the 2-run HR he gave up last night. But it seems to forget Neal saving Esteban's ass in the 5th with one out and runners on 2nd &3rd. Who else do you bring in in the 5th of a close game w/RISP? It's too early to use Damaso. Damaso and Neal have been the best relivers the sox have with inheritted runners. He's still holding hitters to a paltry .225 avg while pitching out of the pen. I'll live with Neal's 2-run shots. I'd prefer he learn to make them solo shots. It's a learning process, and in a perfect world he would be learning it at AAA. But right now he's the best option we've got. SoxAce
Man imagine Neal as a starter (say next year ) with runners on 2nd and 3rd w/ less than 2 outs. He would be awesome in those tight spots.
