Poor guy... that sucks

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Seattle Mariners put catcher Miguel Olivo on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, one day after doctors fitted him with a stent to remove kidney stones.

The move is retroactive to Wednesday. Olivo, acquired Sunday in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, made his Seattle debut in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Texas. He probably won't rejoin the team until at least next Wednesday in Toronto.

``We think our most prudent course is to be sure Miguel is fully recovered before we put him back in a game,'' general manager Bill Bavasi said.

Team doctor Larry Pedegana said the removal of a kidney stone causes inflammation in the tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder. A stent is required to keep the tube from swelling shut.

Olivo is expected to have the stent removed Monday. Bavasi said the Mariners placed him on the DL ``to remove any uncertainty about his availability and make sure he doesn't try to rush back before he is completely ready.''

Olivo joined Seattle in the five-player trade that sent right-hander Freddy Garcia to the White Sox.

To replace Olivo on the roster, the Mariners recalled third baseman Justin Leone, one of their top hitting prospects, from Triple-A Tacoma.

The 27-year-old Leone, Seattle's 13th-round selection in the June 1999 draft, was in uniform for Thursday's game. He was hitting .269 in 68 games at Tacoma, ranking third in the Pacific Coast League with 21 home runs.

Talk about a rough week.

Get traded from a real contender to a last place team. Go 0-3. Miss a pitch for a run (went as a wild pitch, but he should have had it), Kidney stones. 15 day DL.

Hang in there Miguel! This too shall 'pass'.
