Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO SB CS AVG J Shaffer 78 210 25 48 7 1 0 57 17 33 59 1 5 .229 I don't understand why hes playing, I don't remember his name being mentioned. Rex Hudler
Josh Shaffer..... He is the son of one of the Sox higher up front office personnel (Duane Shaffer). I am not sure of his position, but I think it is a VP level position. As far as Josh goes, he came to the Sox from the Angels in the same trade that brought Scott Bikowski last off-season. I believe the Sox gave up two Class A pitchers, but I don't recall their names. Josh was a reserve for the Barons last year and frankly did not belong at that level. He had been in High-A with the Angels the year before, but was hurt in a car accident and missed a lot of the season. I am not sure if that accident had any effect on him last year, but he was really, really skinny. He was weak and had absolutely no pop. He also was very error-prone. My best guess is that unless last year was an abberration then AA is as far as he will ever get. If he comes into this year stronger, then perhaps there were lingering effects from the accident and last year needs to be forgotten. I wondered what he was doing in the lineup as well, but with SS games, they need extra players and the full Minor League camp hasn't started yet, so maybe they just needed an extra body. Maybe dad has some pull too?

Rex Hudler
Jeeze a total schmo and you still know his story. Thanks for the info. He spent the whole year in Birmingham last year. Not hard to know something about the players.
KipWellsFan
Oh I didn't know you are from Birmingham. Then you would know all about the players.
Rex Hudler
Oh I didn't know you are from Birmingham. Then you would know all about the players. I see lots of games there.... Talk to some of the players.... Have a friend that works on the Barons staff...... The Minor League atmoshphere is great. You can be real close to the game and the players are very accessible. You can sit near scouts, watch their radar guns, etc. If you aren't a pest, then most are very nice and will talk to you, players included. KipWellsFan
We have an independant league team here in Winnipeg they get great crowds. We had higher average attendances than the Montreal Expos I believe. Not many stars come through here but a player that played for Winnipeg last year is on Seattle's 40-man roster this year: Bobby Madritsch. Maybe you've heard of him he throws beebees. I think he's got a shot at making the team but not really sure.

Can anyone explain this? Those numbers are probably better than anything Choice K-layton put up in the first halves of '01-'02 respectively. Looks like the Sox do what they can to get a scrub at every level of play.
SI1020
I notice in that box score that Neal Cotts got hammered pretty good. I was hoping that kid would amount to something. Not if he keeps pitching like that.
Rex Hudler
I notice in that box score that Neal Cotts got hammered pretty good. I was hoping that kid would amount to something. Not if he keeps pitching like that. Can we give the guy a break? This was his first or second appearance in big league camp. He may turn out to be great or he may end up sucking, but neither will be because he has a few outings in ST.
Soxfest
Shaffers only there because of Daddy, it is like when Schueler drafted his daughter, what bulls***.

method
Hes only here because of his dad. However he did have some potential before the accident. And the players we gave up will never mount to anything. They wouldnt have even gotten a chance iwth the sox. We had to much pitching depth. So if it makes his father happier. why not? Duane shaffer has been quite a important part of the Org for quite a long time... Soxfest - I think this is different then when Schu wasted a draft pick on his daughter. In that we had no chance of her making the major leagues... Shaffer might still have a shot...

Didn't they draft the sibblings of Crede,Paul and whoever else, those 50th rd picks don't matter a lick.

I saw Cotts pitch for one year here at ISU, and he gains momentum as the season progresses. Players don't tend to peak in the preseason. method
What i really liked about cotts. IS he gave up 5 runs in one inning, however from the radio broadcast... they announcers said that he kept goin after the hitters... an got 3 good outs... Glad to see they dont give in.... So, even a "wasted" pick can pay off sometimes.

SI1020
Sorry Neal, sorry board. I know one outing doesn't make or break any player. I'd just like to see some of the prospects KW got in recent trades pan out. Somebody I know is high on Cotts and in respect to him I'd like to see the kid do good.
