Frustrated Thomas swears All-Star process is unfair to Sox

July 5, 2004

BY DOUG PADILLA

Frank Thomas still is not talking to the media, but he made sure his thoughts were known regarding the All-Star selection process that yielded the White Sox only one spot on the American League team.

Thomas walked through the visiting dugout in Wrigley Field using an expletive-laced tirade while calling the roster-compiling process political.

Thomas, who has been named to five All-Star teams, did not necessarily seem to be upset that he was left off the roster. He pointed to Paul Konerko, sitting on the bench nearby, while saying his teammate should have made the team. Konerko, who chuckled in appreciation, has 20 home runs and 54 RBI.

Thomas said he also was disturbed that the Cleveland Indians, the third-place team in the White Sox' division, had four players named to the team. He said the Sox deserved more respect for being higher in the standings. The Indians' All-Stars are Victor Martinez, Matt Lawton, Ronnie Belliard and C.C. Sabathia.

The Minnesota Twins, who also are higher in the division standings than the Indians, were another club that had just one player make the AL team, pitcher Joe Nathan.

Thomas and Konerko were on a list of five players who could be added to the team via an Internet vote this week, but they actually could hinder each other's chances.

''I think it's going to be tough with two White Sox on there,'' Konerko said. ''That in itself is kind of a little unfair because if you get votes, they're probably going to be split.

''[but] it's nice to be considered. To be considered is a great thing, and I take it as a compliment.''

BEN WAITING: Ben Davis, acquired along with Freddy Garcia last week, will be in the lineup for the first time Tuesday when he starts at catcher against the Anaheim Angels

''I just have to go out there and stay within myself and not do too much,'' said Davis, who is batting .088 (3-for-34) this season. ''I'm not going to try and hit four home runs in a game. I'm not a big home run guy, but I'll take my rips and get in there and do what I can do.''

Davis was impressed with the intensity of the Cubs-Sox series.

''I went out to warm up a pitcher the other day and I was talking to an umpire and I said 'This is like a heavyweight fight,''' Davis said. ''It's awesome the way the city takes the two teams in.''

PLAN UNMASKED: If the White Sox make another deal before the trading deadline at the end of this month, indications are it won't be for an upgrade at catcher. The Colorado Rockies are said to be shopping Charles Johnson, but the Sox are not interested.

''We have so much offense, we don't need a great offensive catcher, we just need a guy who can handle the staff,'' Sandy Alomar Jr. said. "I think the guys who are here are capable of doing that. Unless you want to put yourself in debt and get somebody whose making a lot of money.''

ELBOW ROOM: Scott Schoeneweis threw a bullpen session before Sunday's game in preparation for coming off the disabled list Wednesday. He is scheduled to start against the Angels.

''I'll be good by Wednesday,'' said Schoeneweis, who had inflammation in his left elbow. ''The thing is I'm going to have a lot of time off after [because of the All-Star break], but I feel good. There is a good amount of velocity behind the ball. I shouldn't be too rusty. I didn't miss a whole lot of time.''

Schoeneweis said he has been told he is back in the rotation for good and any concerns the Sox have are physical and not performance-based.

Kind of a big "DUH" award to the media for asking Sandy if we need a new starting catcher.

What the hell would he say?

"Uhh yeah I suck, get someone new to replace me."

No Sandy doesn't suck but still it is a silly question to be asking him.

Why does he throw this into the article, am I supposed to give a damn about what Ben Davis thinks about the Sox - Cubs rivalry. Plus he's got some stupid ass quote "uhh it's like a heavyweight fight." That analogy sucks ass the best you'll ever be is a bullpen catcher, shut up Ben Davis.

I just can't stand Ben Davis.  I don't care what he thinks, cause he's a bumb.

I think the word is "bum" and how come can you can't stand Ben Davis?

What has Ben Davis done that deserves the anger?

What did he say about the sox-cubs rivalry that is new and has not been said 1,000 times (more or less) before by players on both sides?

Ever since he was in High School he was overrated. He tricked the Padres into taking him way to early in the draft. Then when he made it to the majors he did absolutely nothing. They had to ship off thier "Catcher of the future" to Seattle for nothing, because they couldn't afford him. When he was in Seattle he was always calling out coaches and teammates, and not doing anything on the field, he's just not the kind of guy you want on your team.

I'm actually glad that nobody made it from the Sox. I think it may have created a mini-rift in the clubhouse (ie why did ____ go and not me?). If not for the required 1 man per team, we probably wouldn't have sent anybody. I think instead there will be more of an "us against them" sort of attitude.

Plus, I'm not sure that anybody on the team truly deserved to go. This is more of a team than a bunch of individuals that play well. It's a credit to the manager and how he has pulled this group together as a unit, that we have amassed the record we have without any all-stars.
