like it or not, maggs will get 5/70 somewhere else, may it be the spankes or san diego or boston... maggs is a hot item to have on a ball club and a lot of teams would be happy to have him at 5/70... val and tejada set the bar that high and maggs knows that he can get that level of contract

our office knows that too and had been slowly upping their offer, they know that he will stay for 5/70 but they wanna see 3 things

a) is he worth it to the sox

and

B: will he settle for less

and

c) could that 70 mill be better spent over the next 3-5 years?

they seemed to have done the same with Garcia

the first reported deal with him was 3/24

he got 3/27

the office probably would have had no problem going as high as 3/33 tops for garcia, but started low and setteled in the middle, thats the name of the game in contract neg.

if the three questions above are anwsered in maggs favor, then he will be a white sox RF'der for life and will get 5/70 with no clause and no defered money

a) he is worth it to the sox (16 - 18 record without him has shown this true already)

B: looks like this statement by maggs tells them, nope, he's playin hardball

and

c) this is the big question mark.... if we could get 2 starting pitchers in the off season to the tune of something like garcia got 3/30 each.... thats 60 mil... 10 mil less then we would give maggs... and we would have...

burley

garcia

top of the line starter for 3/30

top of the line starter for 3/30 #2

and garland to round it off

i hope one of the two happens

To me, this one quote says it all.....he does not consider himself part of us folks....hasta la vista

"It's hard to say," Ordonez said. "They signed Garcia, and hopefully, we can get something done. That's all I can say."

Don't get that deep with Magglio's quotes. His English is not that great.

Just what we need in our offense, another overpaid guy hitting .250 that strikes out too much. Jones better not be here. We don't need to spend $13 mil to get a #6 hitter. We could get someone similar for considerably less. Ortiz is basically the same player as Freddy and Buehrle and Loaiza, only he gets to face a pitcher and plays in a pitchers' park. That is not what we need. Basically, getting Maggs back in the lineup is going to have a greater impact than anyone we could add that is not named Randy Johnson. Considering some of the guys that are going to be available, it would be much more advantageous to start with a clean slate and two draft picks then expensive veterans(unless of course we get a young stud along the lines of Ben Sheets, which isn't going to happen).

Always have been and always be a Maggs fan.

The injury has made a bad situation worse.

He's feeling the pressure to get back and put up numbers in his walk year.

The Sox haven't made it any better by complaining about him in the press.

If they've made the determination he's NOT going to resign then I'm all for trading him because the draft choice route doesn't thrill me.

But the soap opera part of the story needs to end.

Look at what has happened since A-Rod signed his monster deal. Only one player has gotten even close to a $15 mil deal, and that was Vlad. Maggs ain't Vlad. Plus the knee injury, no matter how minor, will slow down some people from signing that check. Even Tejada didn't get that money, and he was completely healthy and only one year removed from an MVP. Maggs will probably fall somewhere between what Tejada got, which was $12 mil a year for 6 years and heavily backloaded, and what Vlad got. 30 year old outfielders don't get 5 year $15 million deals. Beltran will get a huge deal around $15 mil, but Maggs and Nomar are going to be pretty pissed off when they don't get as much as they thought. Look at what happened to I-Rod and Maddux last year. Even Vlad has to wait a long time before he got what he wanted. The Yankees are probably the only team that can afford to sign him without signifcantly hurting their teams' financial position, and they already have Sheffield(please stop saying Matsui in center. They'll just sign Beltran).

I think ripping Magglio here is shortsided. For one thing, he is just answering questions asked to him by reporters. IIRC, it was KW who talked about Maggs contract offer a few days ago, when it was supposed to be kept out of the media. Magglio is a very decent person, who really wouldn't be rude to anybody. He also doesn't speak English that well, (he's very self conscious of it, its one of the reasons you have rarely seen him interview before this season). I think his agents have told him to go out and speak more. Anything that sounds pompous may just be poor word selection. Magglio often ends a sentence with "thats it". We have no way of knowing what has gone on during previous negotiations, nor can we have any idea what the current offer is. Its possible Magglio's contributions have been downplayed, and maybe KW threatened to trade him if he didn't sign.KW said it was close to his asking price, then started hemming and hawing about the final year. All Maggs said was negotiations weren't close, and he wanted to concentrate on getting back in the line up. He also said how much he likes it here. I just want him back on the field.

My final comments. Guardado, which was the original post topic, would be a great move that would really help us out. It wouldn't kill us financially, and it probably wouldn't cost a ton in prospects. I am all for this deal unless it involves Anderson, that guy just looks too good right now. The Ortiz and Jones deal blows. Jones offers nothing to our offense, won't help our defense a whole lot(maybe a couple of catches per week), and Ortiz isn't really an upgrade over our top 3. Keep Maggs because our offense clearly could use a hitter of his caliber. I still want to keep him, because there aren't a whole lot of guys that can produce like he does. I would take one last shot to resign him in the offseason, and then if he goes, invest that money in pitching. Unless they get some young stud that can help for the next few years, I would hang on to Maggs, and see what happens.

Here's the thing, its Maggs that keeps making it public.

That's the thing that is really bothering me. Enough of maggs talking I either want to see him play or dealt. I to am intrigued by ortiz and jones but only if atlanta will eat andruw's salary.

Why would Atlanta want to do that? They would be trading him to get out from under that salary.

Agreed.  I'm just starting to get tired of it.  I thought he said he was waiting until the offseason like months ago, and yet we heard stuff about contract talks a million times up to this point in the season.  Mags is good, but not 5 year $70M good.  Hasta luego Magglio.

It's always a big distraction when a star player is talking contract. We need to just trade him now while we can still get something for him. I think that's gonna happen here really soon.

The Sox should decide what their top dollar offer to Maggs will be, and put it on the table. If Maggs balks at it, send him to San Diego. Maybe they'll not make a run at Finley.

funny how most people were so depressed about losing BIG MO but seem to love the fact maggs will be gone very soon

I doubt anybody "loves" the idea of life without Ordonez. But it's past time to either sign him or not and be done with it for many people.

Just a reminder, they better find a way to NOT need him, because Maggs doesn't need Chicago. That's becoming painfully obvious. BTW, :fyou agents. His agent is the one filling his head with this crap, not Maggs himself.

Ya know what kap.. I have a really good feeling it's not about the $$.. it's about year #5. I think if he doesn't stay there will be many folks surprised at how reasonable the Sox were being trying to make this deal work. Just my $0.02...

good point, but I just don't get that he's worth $15million a year average.

Sounds like they are trying for:

12

13

14

15

16

And yea, the way they write contracts now (front end light, back end heavy, 16mill is a lot to cough up)

Do you think the Sox are being forthright or is this a campaign by management to make him look bad? Or both?

I think they want an "insurance policy" for year #5. Incentive clauses, diminished skills, whatever. To be honest with you.. if year 1, 2, and 3 are based straight up on performance.. I have no problem with some specific goals written into year 4 and 5. But I'm not Magglio so that doesn't mean squat.

I think for a change they are being honest.

There shouldn't be any panic mode to get rid of him. If he doesn't sign, use the money you would have spent on him on someone else. Play out the year and see what happens. I remember about 5 years ago Ivan Rodriquez was going to leave Texas and they thought about trading him. When all was said and done after the season, he re signed. Its possible Maggs and his agents just want to see what he's worth on the open market.
