Rex Hudler
Here is the report I have referenced, in it's entirety. The report was posted by MnSoxFan a member of the World Crossing board. He reported on several ST games in at least as much detail. I saw the B squad game. Got there a little early and had to hike about a mile to practice fields of Sox. About 4 diamonds, one had pitchers on the mound and Gary Ward hitting grounders to 1B and the pitchers after simulating pitching motion had to run over to cover first, among them were Lubasich, Castro, Kirkland, Murray and Meaux. Kirkland is big, tall I mean and not heavy but just a big guy. Impressive size. A couple others too without names on jersey or jackets on. Another had catchers hitting off a pitching machine, saw Carlos Maldonado, Blair Harris and Joe Gillikin, couple others had jackets on so could not tell. Then we go ready for the game. Schilling started against Honel. I was sitting behind the plate with 4-5 prospects without uni's on and was like being at a little league game. I think I was only person watching other than players. Honel got in trouble right away, After a grounder to Reyes at SS the second hitter singled to right, the 3rd batter walked and the 4th batter singled to left. Bases loaded 1 out. A shallow fly to Holt in LF made it two outs, looked like he may get out of it, but the next guy hammered a double to LF corner, 2 scored and on cutoff, Reyes nailed the runner from 1st at the plate. 2-0 Schilling got our guys 1-2-3. Durham popped to 2B, Reyes K'd swinging and Battersby Kd swinging. 2nd inning Honel looked a bit better. K swinging, popout to RF, then a double off LF fence before getting out of it with fly to right. In our 2nd, we again went 1-2-3 against Schilling. Bikowski grounded out 6-3. Acevas flew out deep to RF and Holt popped out to LF. West came in for the 3rd inning. He struck out 1st two guys swinging and then got a grounder to 2nd. He looked bigger and better up close. In Schilling 3rd inning he got Sandoval on grounder to 2nd, Brice worked a 3-2 count but whiffed on a low inside ball. Shaffer then got an infield hit, or maybe an error, hard to see as some people had come in front of us with jug gun on Schilling. Nicholson then flew out to RC. West pitched the 4th too. First guy hit a shot to LF for a double. Then a looper to short LF made it 1st and 3rd 0 outs. Next guy hit SF to Durham in CF, then the next guy hit a liner to third, off Sandoval glove for a hit. Next guy grounded out to 2nd and they ended the inning. I only counted 2 outs, but I think West reached his pitch count maybe. 3-0 at this point, not an official game as Sox coach was calling balls and strikes and there were no other umps etc... Schilling came in again for the 4th, Webster led off and lined a shot over SS for a single to LF. Shoe, this kid looks like a player. Then a young catcher named Chris Stewart checked his swing and hit a soft liner into CF, so 1st and 2nd no outs. Durham hit a chopper down 3rd base line for an out, runners advanced. Reyes hit a shallow fly to LF and Webster was sent and out by a lot. They then cleared the bases as Schilling said he wanted 10 more pitches, so Battersby came up and Kd swinging again and Bikowski grounded to second baseman and that was it. Impressive watching Honel warm up, but then when Schilling came in you could see the difference. The guy is a true professional, no messing around and he did not take it easy on our kids. Hope we learned from it. We do not have much impressive hitting in our AAA or AA teams for sure. Hope our younger guys come around soon.
