Steff
Dr. Wong is.. a doctor. Asians are doctors, engineers, math whizzes, martial artists, etc. I'm looking for a role that doesn't fit the stereotypical asian role. Henry Lee is a prominent forensics expert.. Or does that fit the "Asian" mold..?? What the hell is that anyway..? Like all Italians are mobsters..?
Spiff
Are we forgetting Judge Ito and his stellar work in the OJ trial?
Queen Prawn
I never knew a sterotype of being intelligent was offensive. To each their own... I'm Polish and Irish and I get the wise cracks of 'Dumb Pollak' and 'Fighting Drunk' all the time. I just roll with it. (Any one that knows me, knows I am the complete opposite of those sterotypes.) Anyone else think this thread should be broken up and moved to SLaP?

quade36
Would this be offensive???? An American player being introduced in Japan by the acky breaky heart song and that commercial of the hot dog jumping into the bun that you see at drive in on the jumbo screen. And also eating noises every time that player makes an out, followed by a burp for the third out. These are all American things that someone may interpret as being normal in America

Steff
I'm kinda scared with this thread. Are Americans really that sheltered and lacking the comprehension skills (meaning not able to see or understand a joke, or sarcasm..) that said or something done in jest is turned into this big of a deal? Does that scare anyone else? Headed back to the 70's when "sucks" couldn't be said on the radio... or seen on a sign on TV...? (Yea.. I watched some of the DD special last night.. )

How about an American player being introduced to a guitar solo. I don't think they would be offended at all. As for the hot dog at the drive in reference...I don't know where the hell that fits in. And a eating noise after a pitcher makes an out....and a burp??? that is American??? As Hawk would say......STRETCH......STRETCH.

If I were a closer pitching in the Japanese league, I'd have them play Jimi Hendrix's version of The Star Spangled Banner every time I entered the game. The whole thing. Wong & Owens
I bet you would, racist. Seeing as how i am part Irish and part Polish, and therefore a stupid drunk, I have no idea what you are saying. I am also part Swedish, but I couldn't think of any stereotypes for them. I do have blue eyes and blonde hair, but that's not a fun stereotype. Hmmm.... Oh crap, now JimH has enough info to launch a full investigation on me.
southsideirish
Good you've got nothing on us Aussies then. All aussies are criminals. Everyone knows that Australia was just a prison island for the English. Historical facts. Sorry to offend you with that Aussie stereotype. Plus you guys all talk about your dingos which offends me. How about the theme music to The Terminator or Indiana Jones or Rocky? Would that be offensive to an American? It could be construed as playing into the American stereotype. And the flippin hotdog I'm equally unsure about, is this analogus to Godzilla in the montege? That's a huge stretch IMO, would a King Kong clip be offensive to Konerko? Or to keep the hotdog in there(for whatever reason), how about the scene from The Enforcer when Dirty Harry blows the bad guys away in the street while eating his hotdog. Is there anything more stereotypically American than Dirty Harry? Would that be offensive?
