Whitewashed in '05
Well hopefully all this talk will finally come to an end. There is no way we can afford to give up Garland who will be a mainstay in our rotation for years and our starting CF who we would have no chance in hell of replacing. There are better options out there... I'd like to see the #1 prospect for the Cubs a while back and the 1st round draft pick we traded for. Garland is a good pitcher but I just wish he would turn into the pitcher everyone says he could be. He supposed to be our #1 starter of the future but he couldn't even handle the 3rd spot before we got FG. Now I am not saying trade him just because of that, he shouldn't even be mentioned in trade talks but I think he has had enough time in the big leagues to "adjust" to the pitcher he should be. Every year we say "next year will be his year" but that year never comes. I really hope he's ready to "turn the corner" soon because we need him to. With that said go get em your next start JG. CWSGuy406
I agree that the Sox have virtually no shot at acquiring RJ, but I find ESPN in general a very untrustworthy source for trade rumours. As I recall they had Garcia all but traded to the Yankees before the Sox got him. I really don't remember the Sox even being mentioned as a potential destination for him. ESPN has strong ties to the Northeast and their bias shows when these rumours come up. A better source are the local web sites. Exactly what I was going to say. Great post, PM. I doubt ESPN had us getting Colon a year and a half ago, nor Everett and Alomar towards the deadline. Kenny usually flies under the radar, so-to-speak. JoshPR
Remeber ESPN has there own agenda. Market the Yanks, Red Sox and Cards, hell that's all they talk about ohh add the giants cause of Bonds
Pasqua's Mailman
Not sure if anyone heard Len Pasqorelli (sp?) or not on ESPN Radio (ironically enough) but he had an interesting take on the whole Johnson saga. He basically came out and said that most of the Johnson to the Yankees stuff was generated by the Yankees. He claims that the Yankees just don't have what it takes to make a deal like that either straight up or three-way. As for Boston, he didn't see that happening either for some of the same reasons but also because Johnson is not a big fan of Schilling. The one team in the best position (again according to Pasqorelli) is Anaheim. No mention of the Sox. Concluded that the Diamondbacks really don't want to trade him and would have to be faced with a deal that they couldn't refuse before they pulled the trigger. AngelasDaddy0427
If we are going to bother getting a lefty starter just get Wilson Alverez. He could definately do better then Shoe out of the 5th spot and would be a better bullpen arm in the playoff's.
LDF
I agree! For a few reasons. RJ is at the tail end of his career. He wants another Ring with the best proven contender around. The Yanks and Cards have shown domination more than anyone. Don't get me wrong....... I'm happy with our team, but put yourself in RJ's position. He sees us 1/2 game in first in a weak division, and sees others who have a lot more wins than us and are 7 - 9 games in front of everyone else in a tough division. If you were Johnson and was at the tail end of your career, why would he choose us, when there are a couple of real dominating teams out there that look unstopable? Plus, they are in tough divisions where it would bring out the best in RJ's competitive juices. Lets face it, we still have some weaknesses. Shoney is a huge questionmark as of late. Loaiza isn't real sharp right now. And we have a hard time winning games against the west coast, and against other ace pitchers in the league. Forget Johnson! Let's get the best we can get to fill our holes, and hope that at playoff time, we get hot. When we get hot, we're unbeatable!!! it isn't that we are in a weak division, but did we help ourself by losing to oak. are we really a contender or by default a contender b/c of the division. We are a contender because of the division we are in no doubt.
greasywheels121
We are a contender because of the division we are in no doubt. Something about that from Chisox.com.... Notes: Battle for the Central begins Notes: Battle for the Central begins Twins and White Sox exchange words OAKLAND -- The battle for the American League Central doesn't seem to really begin until the verbal volleys start flying between the Twins and the White Sox. It appears as if Twins outfielder Jacque Jones fired the first shot in a weekend baseball column published in the Chicago Tribune. "If you want me to be honest, I have to say that the way we've played, we deserve to be 10 games behind the White Sox," Jones said. "But as bad as we've played, we're still hanging around. "If we play well, it's not going to be nice [for the Sox]. I'm not taking anything away from that team over there, Chicago, but it's not going to be nice for them if we play well for an extended period of time." Jones' commentary wasn't exactly demeaning toward the White Sox, but served more to illustrate the Twins' confidence in their chances to capture a third straight Central Division title. Minnesota started Sunday with a 48-42 record, losers of five of their last six games, and one-half game behind the White Sox. But as much as the Twins have struggled and battled through significant injuries to Shannon Stewart, Doug Mientkiewicz, Joe Mauer, Corey Koskie and Luis Rivas, the White Sox have not exactly played up to their potential. They also had to perform for 37 games without Magglio Ordonez and are now working for the foreseeable future without Frank Thomas. "They have been down, but so have we," said White Sox shortstop Jose Valentin of the team's first half. "We win four in a row but then lose five straight. We haven't been consistent and we are still in first place. "It's something where we have to go out there and forget about Minnesota. We have to take care of who we are playing each day. You can't overlook anyone." The White Sox have hit their high-water mark this year at nine over .500 on two separate occasions and improved once again Sunday with the acquisition of Carl Everett for minor league pitchers Jon Rauch and Gary Majewski. They also are counting on a tough finishing schedule for the Twins to have the same effect it did on the White Sox last September, when they lost a two-game lead over the final three weeks. An eight-game road trip to start the second half is not exactly the easiest road to travel for the South Siders. They certainly don't have any sympathy for Jones and the Twins, or any other team chasing them in the standings. "We are playing a tough team in Oakland, and they are playing one of the worst teams in baseball in Kansas City," Valentin said of the Twins. "And they got beat twice. That's not our fault." "(Jones) is telling the truth," added Willie Harris of Jones' statement that the Twins deserve to be further behind. "They are a team that doesn't roll over, but we aren't either. That little remark about (deserving to be) 10 games out. He's right. With the team we have over here, he should consider himself lucky."
