I was just thinking about Weezer's Pinkerton album. Because I was listening to it on the way to work today.

It kind of reminds me of PetSounds/Smile stuff in a way. Because it was Rivers really opening himself up and exposing himself on a CD to the rest of the world. It failed so badly, and the work was so misunderstood that the band just kinda disappeared for a while. And what came back just isn't as good. Or as personal.

it failed miserably...commercially?

For one i think they made a couple of mistakes with that album in using el scorcho as a single...but pinkerton is one of my all time favorite albums and i think is much more highly regarded now.

Sometimes you just have to let an album soak in for a little while. The band didnt really disappear as much as the Rivers decided to go to college(Yale or Harvard, cant remember). I remember playing El Scorcho in SIU's college station WIDB and thinking that I kind of liked it, but I couldnt see it going over well with the mainstream, coming off of how huge The Sweater Song and Buddy Holly were.

It was panned huge when it first came out. Critically and commercially a flop and from what I understand, it did nearly break the band up. They haven't written anything anywhere close to as personal or raw or based on emotion. Now its all deconstructed Nirvana songs with not much feeling behind them.

It's The Pogues and Mr. Shane McGowan all day today!

Well jimmy played harmonica in the pub where I was born

He played it from the night time to the peaceful early morn

He soothed the souls of psychos and the men who had the horn

And they all looked very happy in the morning

Now jimmy didn’t like his place in this world of ours

Where the elephant man broke strong men’s necks

When he’d had too many powers

So sad to see the grieving of the people that he’s leaving

And he took the road for God knows in the morning

We walked him to the station in the rain

We kissed him as we put him on the train

And we sang him a song of times long gone

Though we knew that we’d be seeing him again

(far away) sad to say I must be on my way

So buy me beer and whiskey ’cause I’m going far away (far away)

I’d like to think of me returning when I can

To the greatest little boozer and to sally maclennane

The years passed by the times had changed I grew to be a man

I learned to love the virtues of sweet sally maclennane

I took the jeers and drank the beers and crawled back home at dawn

And ended up a barman in the morning

I played the pump and took the hump and watered whiskey down

I talked of whores and horses to the men who drank the brown

I heard them say that jimmy’s making money far away

And some people left for heaven without warning

We walked him to the station in the rain

We kissed him as we put him on the train

And we sang him a song of times long gone

Though we knew that we’d be seeing him again

(far away) sad to say I must be on my way

So buy me beer and whiskey ’cause I’m going far away (far away)

I’d like to think of me returning when I can

To the greatest little boozer and to sally maclennane

When jimmy came back home he was surprised that they were gone

He asked me all the details of the train that they went on

Some people they are scared to croak but jimmy drank until he choked

And he took the road for heaven in the morning

We walked him to the station in the rain

We kissed him as we put him on the train

And we sang him a song of times long gone

Though we knew that we’d be seeing him again

(far away) sad to say I must be on my way

bow to Shane, bow!

It was christmas eve babe

In the drunk tank

An old man said to me, won’t see another one

And then he sang a song

The rare old mountain dew

I turned my face away

And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one

Came in eighteen to one

I’ve got a feeling

This year’s for me and you

So happy christmas

I love you baby

I can see a better time

When all our dreams come true

They’ve got cars big as bars

They’ve got rivers of gold

But the wind goes right through you

It’s no place for the old

When you first took my hand

On a cold christmas eve

You promised me

Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome

You were pretty

Queen of new york city

When the band finished playing

They howled out for more

Sinatra was swinging,

All the drunks they were singing

We kissed on a corner

Then danced through the night

The boys of the nypd choir

Were singing galway bay

And the bells were ringing out

For christmas day

You’re a bum

You’re a punk

You’re an old slut on junk

Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed

You scumbag, you maggot

You cheap lousy f*****

Happy christmas your arse

I pray God it’s our last

I could have been someone

Well so could anyone

You took my dreams from me

When I first found you

I kept them with me babe

I put them with my own

Can’t make it all alone

I’ve built my dreams around you

One of my favs, The Pogues with a Latin twist:

I am francisco vasquez garcia

I am welcome to almeria

We have sin gas and con leche

We have fiesta and feria

We have the song of the cochona

We have brandy and half corona

And leonardo and his accordione

And kalamari and macaroni

Come all you rambling boys of pleasure

And ladies of easy leisure

We must say adios! until we see

Almeria once again

There is a minstrel, there you see,

And he stoppeth one in three

He whispers in this one’s ear

Will you kindly kill that doll for me

Now he has won cochona in the bingo

All the town has watched this crazy gringo

As he pulls off the dolls head laughing

And miraldo! throws it’s body in the sea

El veinticinco de agosto

Abrio sus ojos jaime fearnley

Para el bebe cinquante cincampari

Y se tendio para cerrarlos

Y costello el rey del america

Y suntuosa cait o’riordan

Nor vompere mis calliones

Los gritos fuera de las casas

i just bought LIars - drum's not dead and McLusky - McLuskyism(3cd farewell from my favorite group of welchman that just make fun of everything)

this McLusky is awesome... i've had liars forever and its my favorite of the year so far. It's so beautiful. They got this studio in east berlin where the commies used to do stories over the radio so they had these 5 rooms in the studio with incredible acoustics where they'd record like crunching footsteps and stuff so they used all the rooms and its just this incredibly atmospheric album with amazing drumming...

Tomorrow afternoon I am picking up the 2-DVD set "The Arsenal Of Megadeth".

Tomorrow night I shall RAWK!!!!!

:headbang  :snr  :headbang

You know, at one time I think Megadeth was really on a roll with "Symphony of Destruction" and "Sweating Bullets", and then they just faded faster than a hypercolor t-shirt(ha, im dating myself). Dave Mustain had some good things going on, I wonder what happened. Youthanasia just wasnt up to par after Countdown to Extinction.

With Mega-Dave it all comes down to too many lineup changes.

But you should check out the last CD they put out, The System Has Failed. I like it a lot.

The DVD set is great, by the way!!!

....hypercolor t-shirts..... :puke .........

It'd be perfect, except I'm not really a big fan of either of those bands.

People in Planes album, As Far as the Eye can See, came out today.

I've only listened through it once, but I really enjoyed their EP (the songs from there are all on the album) and I'm liking the rest of the album. Look them up if you're looking for something new.
