Hey Zhamnov, remember when you didn't do jack against Tampa in the eastern finals?

Blackhawks Re-Sign D Jim Vandermeer

July 27, 2004

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman Jim Vandermeer to a multi-year deal.

Vandermeer, 24, stands at 6.01 and weighs in at 218 pounds. He was acquired by the Blackhawks along with Colin Fraser and a 2nd round pick (Bryan Bickell) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Alex Zhamnov and a 4th round pick in the 2004 Entry Draft on February 19, 2004.

Vandermeer was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers on December 21, 2000, after having played his junior hockey at Red Deer in the Western Hockey League. Vandermeer was a WHL First Team All-Star in 2001 and was named the Canadian Major Junior Humanitarian Player of the Year in 2001.

After playing his first pro season for the Philadelphia Phantoms in the American Hockey League in 2001-02, Vandermeer got his first taste of NHL action the following season. He played in 24 games for the Flyers during the 2002-03 season and had two goals and three points in 24 games to go along with 27 penalty minutes.

Vandermeer split time between the Flyers and the Phantoms last season before being acquired by the Blackhawks. While with the Flyers, he played in 23 games scoring three goals and five points with 25 penalty minutes. For the Phantoms in the AHL, he appeared in 26 games with one goal and seven points and 120 penalty minutes. With the Blackhawks, he appeared 23 games scoring two goals and 10 assists for 12 points and 58 penalty minutes.

Vandermeer has played in 70 career NHL games scoring seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points with 110 penalty minutes. He has also appeared in eight career playoff games for the Flyers with one assist and nine penalty minutes.

He was at least decent, which is something that's not been seen much in this organIzation in the past few years (Karpovtsev, Dempsey, etc...). On good teams, he's a 4th-6th defenseman, imho. But, I bet he'll be in at the 2 or 3 (McCarthy is our best blueliner, imho).

That is not much money tied up to him either, which is good as well.

He was hurt for a while last season, which is why you didn't see him at all down the stretch.

I don't think it's that they didn't like him; but, instead, it's that Sutter seemed to have a major crush on Alexander Karpovtsev, henceforth, the 28+ minutes of ice time he'd routienly give Karpovtsev every game, which limited the amount of ice time that could have been given to Stevie Mac.

I know Mac was hurt last season but even when he was healthy it just seemed like Sutter esp. didn't care much for him. Same as Arnason. I would be surprised if he is still around the Hawks as well.

Karpovtsev's gone though, so there's a ton of ice time given to the others now!

I am very glad Karpotsev is finally gone. The best moves the Hawks have done recently in getting rid of Karpotsev and Krispy Kream Boris Smirnov. Those two were useless. However, Stevie Mac and Arnie are said to be not very much liked by Sutter. Sutter and Arnie almost came to blows last year. Hopefully both will still play with the Hawks because I like them both and the Hawks need them as well.

When hockey finally does roll around, whenever it may be, the Hawks will, at the very least, have a young, exciting team. And our defense is improving as well, and should only get better and better once guys like Seabrook, Barker, Wisnewski (sp?), and Byfuglian (sp?) make it to the NHL.

IMO, Vandermeer is our best all-around defenseman. I really liked what I saw from him last year.

I'm assuming, on D next year, we'll have (in no specific pairs or order):

Vandermeer-Robidas-Berard-Babchuk-Cullimore-Mac, With Kukkonen and *Barinka* battling it out for the seventh defensman (and possibly not Berard or Robidas because of their contracts/arbitration.)

I can live with that for a year or two, considering who we have in the system.

Robidas is so overmatched out there against big forwards, it makes me sick sometimes

Eh - I really liked watching Robidas last year. I won't mind if they let Berard go and keep Robi, because for his lack of size, he sure does play a hell of a defenseman.

They should keep Mr. Masterson. Berard plays darn well considering his sight limitation. He's got a ton of heart and actually displays some of that on the ice. I'd rather have Berard play than Robidas. But, Robidas HAS shown some flare as well. Berard's just the better option.

My problem with the Cullimore signing is that - in reality, he's a very solid number five, number four (MAYBE) defenseman. However - like that Hawks LOVE doing (square pegs in round holes) - they will give him number one, number two d-man minutes. He'll end up being like a Jon Klemm - a solid defenseman, but not a number one defensman that the Hawks will hope for.

I'm still waiting for that those two 'top' signings. I expect Glenn Murray to sign tomorrow. ;)
