Urlacher

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - An eventful opening day of training camp that saw the Bears come to terms with their remaining two unsigned draft picks ended on a disappointing note Wednesday when Brian Urlacher was forced to leave the team's first practice with a hamstring injury.

The four-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker was injured during an 11-on-11 team drill midway through the two-hour workout. He walked under his power to a cart and was driven off the field. Urlacher is scheduled to undergo an MRI Thursday.

"He got a pretty good pull," said general manager Jerry Angelo. "We'll know more (Thursday). (I'm) not really optimistic that it's going to be something that's going to be a few days. (It will be) probably a little longer than that. We'll see for sure (Thursday)."

Despite losing the star of his defense, Lovie Smith remained upbeat after his first training camp practice as an NFL head coach.

"What can I say? Brian's a great player," Smith said. "He's a big part of what we're trying to do. He's down. He didn't have a season-ending injury. We talked about developing our depth at the linebacker position and we're going to have to do it a little bit quicker than we wanted to. He'll be back, but right now he's going to be down. Other guys just have to step up."

Ok people....Urlacher walked off the field on his own strength......its gonna be ok we got a month and a half before the season.....

well wouldnt he start at SLB anyways? Hillenmeyer is the back up MLB

There was some speculation earlier in the year that Briggs could possibly move to MLB, and Urlacher to WLB. This way Urlacher could be the type of player in our defense that Derrick Brooks is in Tampa's. Also, b/c Briggs is such a fierce competitor and has that MLB attitude.
