IlliniKrush
Blackhawks Re-Sign Poapst, Robidas July 29, 2004 The Blackhawks announced today that they have re-signed defensemen Steve Poapst and Stephane Robidas to one-year deals. Poapst, 35, stands at 6.0 and weighs in at 199 pounds. He appeared in 53 games last season with the Blackhawks scoring two goals and four points with 26 penalty minutes. He averaged over 22 minutes of ice time a game (22:14) for the Blackhawks last season which led all Blackhawk defensemen. Poapst has appeared in 245 career NHL games scoring eight goals and 23 assists for 31 points and 126 penalty minutes while skating for the Washington Capitals and the Blackhawks. He also appeared in 498 career AHL games scoring 205 points (45g, 160a). He also played in the ECHL after four years at Colgate University. Poapst signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals on February 4, 1995. Upon becoming a free agent again, Poapst signed with Blackhawks initially on July 27, 2000. Robidas, 27, was acquired by the Blackhawks from the Dallas Stars along with a 2nd round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (Jakub Sindel) in exchange for Jon Klemm and a 4th round pick in 2004 on November 17, 2003. The 5.11, 190-pound defenseman played his first Blackhawks game on November 18th at Edmonton, picked up his first point as a Blackhawk with an assist versus New Jersey on December 21st, and scored his first Blackhawk goal, the game winner in overtime, against the St. Louis Blues on February 22nd. Last season, Robidas appeared in 59 games overall scoring three goals and 13 points with 41 penalty minutes. For Dallas, he played in 14 games scoring one goal with eight penalty minutes and a minus -2 rating. Upon coming to Chicago, Robidas appeared in 45 games scoring two goals and 12 points with 33 penalty minutes and a plus +6 rating while averaging 19 minutes of ice time per game. He was struck in the face with a puck on February 29 in a game versus the Florida Panthers fracturing his cheekbone, which forced him to miss the rest of the regular season. In his NHL career, Robidas has appeared in 257 games scoring 13 goals while adding 33 assists for 46 points with 104 penalty minutes. In playoff competition, Robidas has appeared in 14 games with one assist and 24 penalty minutes.

southsider2k5
So it sounds like the D is pretty well set. Any chance that a Seabrook or Babchuck could make this team?
IlliniKrush
So it sounds like the D is pretty well set. Any chance that a Seabrook or Babchuck could make this team? I think both will be given every chance to make the team, and should. I think Babchuck has a better chance to make it out of camp, but wouldn't be surprised if both make appearances this season and both are NHL regulars by 2005-2006 season. EvilJester99
I would bet that Babchuk will make the team. He played at the end of the year last season. He looked to have one hell of a shot. Plus he has good size.

Plus he has good size. You are right, his shot is heavy as hell. He showed it in some games, and i also got to see him over Christmas break at some practices at the Edge in Bensenville, and was wowed by it. And he's a big, big boy. southsider2k5
I guess the Hawks don't think there will be a next year either, considering they don't even have the schedule posted yet

EvilJester99
I would be surprised if these morons can work anything out b4 next season starts. This will be a huge mistake. I think the strike in 94' was the biggest mistake though. They had the perfect chance to make some noise since baseball went out like they did, and they f***in blew it. IlliniKrush
I still have hope, because i think both sides realize that not having a season could lead to absolutely catastrophic times for the NHL. Like, unimaginable lows.
The Critic
I still have hope, because i think both sides realize that not having a season could lead to absolutely catastrophic times for the NHL. Like, unimaginable lows. When you talk about unimaginable lows, do you mean sitcom re-runs getting batter TV ratings than playoff games? Oh wait, that already happened - this year. The NHL is dead in the water as a major sport, and if they want to retain any measure of relevance in the sporting world at all, they'd better find a way to reach common ground. Hockey is a niche sport, and the worst thing that happened to the NHL in recent years was when Radar Bettman took over as commissioner and tried to force the NHL into becoming the NBA. Overpaid players, a TV contract that was GUARANTEED to lose money for the networks - thereby ruining any chance of a reasonable future TV contract, ticket prices so high that families are forced out of the attendance base only to be replaced by corporate suiteholders and executives who could care less about the team.....the Bettman regime has been a f***ing nightmare. CWSGuy406
Good resigning of Robidas, I like that. I dunno about resigning of Poapst, though, the only thing that does is take away a shot from one of the kids. If there is a season, this year, I really hope that they stick with the rebuilding plan, as opposed to trying to squeek into that 8th spot to get some extra playoff bucks. Stick to rebuilding, let the Babchuk's, Ruutu's, Yakubov's of the world get the most minutes (which I doubt will happen with Sputter), and in a few years, it will pay off. kapkomet
Robidas was here in Dallas for a while. I like him. He plays well for his size. Positionally he always seems to be in the right spot at the right time and he has good on-ice instincts. And, every once in a while he can break out and/or pinch in for that odd man scoring chance. CWSGuy406
Good point - so this year, our defense corps (without Berard - who still might be in, might be out) looks like: Vandermeer, Cullimore, Mac, Poapst (ugh), Robidas, Babchuk. That means that if Berard is signed - f***, another year of Norfolk for Babchuk. I was hoping that Poapst would be let go - that way, you could maybe even make room for Barinka/Kukkonen (I like Kukk a lot, he played a lot better than others on this team last year, yet for some reason, Sutter, IMHO, had it out for him, thus he was sent back to Norfolk.) EvilJester99
I think Kukkonen would be excellent if Sutter would let him play. He looked good when he was up but they sent him back after only a few games.
IlliniKrush
Keith, don't count Babchuck out. He can always win a job in camp by outplaying someone, if he's given a fair shot. I'm not too worried about it.
fitch
Resigning Robidas is good news for the good guys on ice.
