Guest hotsoxchick1
ONLY .... YIKES...........HEY BAGGS WHATS ONLY A HERNIATED DISC WORTH THESE DAYS ...........??? SURPRISE, Ariz. -- As strange as it might sound, Rangers officials were relieved and encouraged to find out that superstar shortstop Alex Rodriguez has a herniated disc in his neck. Considering the possible alternatives, the diagnosis made by Rangers physicians back in Texas is good news because this problem is something that can be treated with an anti-inflammatory injection. The official diagnosis released Friday is a small disc herniation of the C6-7 vertabrae in his neck with accompanying nerve irritation. Rodriguez received an injection Friday morning to relieve the inflammation. It all sounds scary, especially when you're talking about one of the game's greatest stars and the cornerstone of the Rangers. But Rangers GM John Hart thought it was relatively good news. "We certainly don't Alex to be out of camp and have this issue, but if there's a time to have it happen, now is the time," Hart said. "The doctors have been very emphatic in the fact that this is minor, minor. Let's conservatively treat it and quiet it down. We've got time." It's unknown exactly how long he'll be unavailable to play in Cactus League games, but Hart said Opening Day isn't a question mark at this point. "From everything we've been told, I think we're all sitting here very confident that Alex will be ready for Opening Day," Hart said. "We don't have any reason to believe he won't." Rodriguez, who left camp for Texas on Thursday, isn't scheduled to return to the Surprise Recreation Campus until Sunday night at the earliest. He won't be able to do any physical activity for a minimum of 48 hours after the injection, so he'll remain in Texas before returning to Arizona to behind his rehabilitation program. Having him back in camp now might be too tempting for Rodriguez. "Knowing Alex, we're trying to keep him away from this environment for now," Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. Rodriguez had been bothered by soreness in the shoulder since Tuesday and was examined by Dr. Drew Dossett on Thursday morning before returning to Texas. It was Dr. Dossett, the Rangers' spine specialist, who made the diagnosis along with Rangers orthopedist Dr. John Conway after examining Rodriguez and reading MRI and CAT scans. The Rangers will use starting second baseman Michael Young, Donnie Sadler and non-roster invitee Jermaine Clark at shortstop in Rodriguez's absence. At the conclusion of the 2002 season, Rodriguez was named the Player of the Year by The Sporting News and by the Major League Baseball Players Association. He was voted Outstanding AL Player at the Players Choice Awards in 2002 while picking up his second consecutive Hank Aaron Award, recognizing the best overall hitter in the American League. Rodriguez finished second to Oakland shortstop Miguel Tejada in the 2002 American League MVP vote.
baggio202
you cant fix a herniated disc..once it starts to buldge there is no way to push it back in place...anti-inflamatories relieve some of the pain but once it starts to herniate it can only get worse...if you live a seditary lifestyle you can get by w/o doing more damage but in arod's case it will as time goes on get worse because of the physical nature of baseball the thing that should worry arod and team officials is the weakness in his left shoulder..thats what i had..what that means is the the disc is bulging and compressing the nerve that runs down the left arm...as it starts to buldge more it will increase the weakness people have completely blown out discs before and not even known it...it depends what else they effect...but if his is bulging onto a nerve..thats not good...just have to wait and see

WhiteSoxPride3035
This a big problem for Rodriguez. He could get it all worked out in a matter of days ro weeks, but it will be bugging him all season. He will have to make sure he doesn't tweak his neck in the slightest bit, or it could get even worse. And, for people who have A-Rod on there Fantasy Baseball team, I'd have a backup shortstop needed.
Guest hotsoxchick1
baggs i asked you cause your the disc expert here.. so i say it safe to assume that it would suck to be texas right about now.. their key investment is most likely not gonna make a full season huh........... serves them right i guess for forking over that kind of cash........... baggio202
baggs i asked you cause your the disc expert here.. so i say it safe to assume that it would suck to be texas right about now.. their key investment is most likely not gonna make a full season huh........... serves them right i guess for forking over that kind of cash........... well.. he could probably make the season if it not to severe..but texas is kidding itself if they dont think it is serious..i cant stress this enough..once a disc starts to bulge it is impossible to fix it....you cant push it back in...cortizone and anti imflamitories can relieve the symptoms for awhile but they can not fix the problem...being that arod has a physical job it can only get worse...now the question is how fast and how much worse will it get???...that no one can answer....he could play through this his whole career...or he might be under the knife by june...no one can tell..no matter what texas is saying...its impossible.. the only way to fix it is with surgery..and if its one level there is probably a greater than 99% chance arod comes back 100%..but even then you are at about a 30% chance of the disc below and above the fused section herianting within a 5 -10 year tiome period if you continue in an active lifestyle because you dont have the movement in the fused area so it places more stress on those discs.. oh yeah..one thing about MRI's..there is no such thing as a small problem if it shows up on an MRI..doing research ive learned that doctors live and die wih the MRI because its the best tool they have but in reality MRI's miss much more than they catch..just go back to mike sirotka...it took 3 MRI's to find his torn labrum..then when they went in they found that he also had a level 2 rotator cuff tear..thats a moderate tear which wasnt picked up in 3 MRI's all done at different angles...my MRI showed a very minor buldge too, like arod's..after a year of therapy and no improvements another MRI showed only a slighty degenrating condition..so we went ahead with surgery..when they got into my neck my surgeon later told me he never saw a more messed up disc for only a one level surgery..the disc was completely herniated , i had bone spurs that were forming that were razor sharp and cutting the nerve that runs down my left arm which has left my that arm at about 20% of its original strength..its practically useless now..hopefull yas time goes on my strength comes back...but none of this showed up on my MRI so if they find something in any MRI..its not minor..because if it was minor it wouldnt show up on the MRI at all i guess what im trying to say is once this process starts..it only gets worse... Well...if Texas didn't give A-Rod that kind of money, some other team would have. It's just the way the game is. I hope this most recent off-season is a sign of things to come, because the contracts are getting out of hand. They are making toooo much money to play a game. Yes, they bring in tons of revenue, but when a guy who hits .250 with 25 HR is making $5M a year, while a teacher makes $40K, there is a problem. Chisoxfn
Well, someone would of gave him 20 million per over 6 yrs or so (I think the Braves offered something like this) and then Texas offered 25 per over 10.

clujer420
What do teachers' salaries have to do with A-Rod's pay? Nothing. I never mentioned A-Rod's salary in relation to a teacher's salary. Someone needs to read more carefully. What I said was that baseball players in general make too much money in relation to teachers. The contracts have gotten completely out of hand in the past decade, and it's ridiculous. They make WAY too much money to play a game, and like I said, I hope off-season '02-'03 is a sign of things to come. Teachers make $40K per year, and play a fairly large role in raising and influencing dozens of kids. The average major league player makes $3M a year, and that comes out to $18,518.52 per GAME...the key word being game. Anyone who thinks that isn't absurd is sadly misguided. Chisoxfn
You can also apply that to actors. The fact is if people are going to go and support them, then they deserve some of the money. Are salaries ridiculous, your damn right they are. Still if the owners are going to offer them then the players should accept them. I do hope that 02-03 was just the start. NO longer should owners be absolute idiots signing 4th or 5th starters to 6 mill a year type deals or giving guys like Sterling Hitchock 5 mill a year or Royce Clayton 4 mill per. Good point with actors...they make some of the crappiest movies and get paid millions for them. Good point. And of course they should take the money. All of us would, and I'd certainly take it as well. Basically it comes down to the owners saying "enough is enough" and maybe only giving the truly deserving people the mega bucks. I mean, a guy will have a good year in the final year of his contract, and cash in for a 5-year, $40M contract because of it. An example of that is the 3rd baseman that played for the Rockies and then got a huge contract. I can't think of his name at the moment, but it was insane. It starts with the owners.
