World Cup Begins!

Recommended Posts

I love both hockey and soccer. I think soccer is tough for people to get used to at first because it's not constant end-to-end rapid fire shots etc. The scoring chances develop slower, there's a lot of thinking involved, it's sorta like chess on a giant field. I wish the World Cup was every 2 years instead of every 4, because it's one of my favorite things to watch.

Hockey is awesome for other reasons, it's fast and hard-hitting (when played right, as the WCoH is), with ridiculous stick work and crazy goaltending. Regular season hockey can sometimes fall on the boring side, but nothing beats the intensity of playoff hockey, especially sudden death overtime. Olympic hockey is really fun to watch too because of the more open, free-flowing style and the average skill level being greater than the NHL with its 30 teams.

I'm no soccer fan, by any means. But I think in at least one way, soccer can be compared to baseball. If you don't understand the nuances of the game, it seems dull and boring. But to a seasoned fan, there is so much to see that your average Joe wouldn't pick up on or begin to understand. In Athens, a lot of the fans that watched baseball played had no clue as to what was happening and left games early. Yet, those same fans are probably tabid soccer fans.

And do not give me any "How dare you compare soccer to baseball" crap. I'm looking at only from the context of what a knowledgable fan from each sport can see and appreciate vs. the casual or new fan.
