2004 College Football Trash Talk Thread

So what was supposed to be a "fill in a few gaps" recruiting season has turned into one of the best under Joe Tiller. Besides 5 star recruit Kyle Williams, Purdue's added three 4/5 star (depending where you look) recruits in the last 2 weeks.

Top 5 WR - Selwyn Lymon

Top 10 DE - J.B. Paxon - (was between Purdue and Tenn., commited Friday night)

Top 15 OL - Jason Kacinko - (surprise recruit from PA that everyone thought for sure was going to Wisky)

It's great to see how well Tiller and his staff has done, despite having many of these guys visit during the stretch where Purdue choked big time.

Oh and Greasy, I think that's a great pick by IU as coach. Hoeppner should help out the program greatly.

I know this isn't going to be the most famous coach, but I'm kind of liking what I'm hearing about Hoeppner, IU's new coach.  I have faith that AD Greenspan can get the football program turned around.  Another good thing about Hoeppner is he was born in Fort Wayne! :headbang

Greasywheels did you watch the press conference of Hoeppner. I came away very impressed with him. I think Greenspan made the perfect choice for IU football. He has IU in his blood.

I really like what I've heard so far. I read articles in the Fort Wayne papers today, being back in town...the IndyStar online and the Hoosiers website. I'm really pleased with what I'm hearing. I've read quotes from people like Ben Ben Roethlisberger, etc. saying nothing but great things about him. He does seem like he's always been a big IU guy. It's rare to hear that anyone's only opt out would be to Indiana football, but I like it. Greenspan seems like he's really going to make football a priority here; I think Hoeppner could be the guy to get things turned around.

Here's some quotes from people around football...

Mid-American Conference commissioner Rick Chryst: "I'm excited for Terry and I'm sure everyone in the MAC and at Miami wish him well.

"I'm confident that Miami will find another good coach because that is one of the best jobs in the country. Terry is leaving a program that is in good shape, very healthy. They have leadership, financing, a strong (athletic director) and a football program that has a lot of momentum."

Purdue coach Joe Tiller: "He's a pretty positive guy. . . . He's an upbeat guy. I don't see him lamenting about what is not possible at IU. I see him focusing on what is possible."

Fort Wayne Snider coach Russ Isaacs: "He's an Indiana guy. Obviously he's coming into the state knowing a good many people. He knows the landscape. He knows how high school football works here. He is held in very high regard."

Woodlan coach Leland Etzler: "I was a position coach when Terry played here. I remember him as a great competitor, a good athlete.

"He was a little young for his grade . . . and we were a small school. We still are.

"I think he had most success as a high hurdler. He was the sixth man on our basketball team, not because he had the sixth-best talent but because he could come off the bench and play a couple of positions. He didn't especially like that. But he was a super kid with a lot of heart."

Defensive back Bruce Hampton, one of 15 players who has made an oral commitment to IU: "I think it's great that Indiana hired a coach from a program that has been winning, and one that has a great tradition like that one. I'm still committed to IU."

IU quarterback Blake Powers upon learning that Hoeppner plans to run a spread offense, utilizing plays out of the shotgun, behind center and some no-huddle: "If you're a quarterback, hearing that he runs the spread is the only thing you want to hear."

IU kickoff return man Lance Bennett on whether most IU players would stay: "I don't think anyone is leaving. I don't think that's an issue at all. I think a lot of guys are getting excited about the future."

IU running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis: "He's a proven winner. We have to go out and work hard for him and adapt to the new stuff he's going to be doing real fast in the spring and winter conditioning."

Jane Hoeppner, the coach's wife: "It happened very quickly. We already feel very welcome and at home here."

IU president Adam Herbert: "He has strong Hoosier values. He is one of us. He is a motivator. He believes deeply in the importance of family, tradition, discipline, mutual respect and -- as he has stressed on so many occasions -- loyalty. His success as a coach speaks for itself and will continue here."

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who played for Hoeppner at Miami: "The players are going to love him. He's a players' coach."

Northwestern coach Randy Walker: "Terry was very instrumental in helping us rebuild the Miami program and took it on to greater heights after he replaced me in 1999. He'll be very successful at Indiana."

Derrick isn't quite the top HS player in the nation, but he's definitely one of the best. His older brother Dominique played at UNC and was very talented also, but I think Derrick will end up a WR at PSU, but some great pickups to try and revive the program. PSU has 2 awesome commits in Justin King and now Derrick, but the others are relatively unheralded, we will see if King and Williams committing start a recruiting landslide for PSU like it does alot of the time. OSU's class is just absolutely loaded, car dealerships will be very busy ;) lol j/k, I think.

As for Purdue, they have a very solid class and could possibly have the best player from the entire class for the future in Selwyn Lymon, 6'5 4.38 40, Randy Moss type numbers. Great, great pick-up. Greg Orton is another big speedy WR that could dominate on the other side of Lymon, another great pick-up.

Not that anyone cares, but I think the 3 best players in the class are

Selwyn Lymon

Fred Rouse and

Justin King

By the way Rex, Ben Olson committed to UCLA 2 days ago.

Yeah its pretty tough to call. I judge by who I think will make the most impact at their respective positions. Rouse and Lymon both have Randy Moss type athleticism at the WR position and Justin King is a playmaker thats very strong at the CB position. Its tough to say they will make more of an impact than someone like Ryan Perilloux at QB, or Derrick Williams wherever he ends up, but its just my opinion. I'm sure someone thats unheralded will end up as a top player in the class, it happens alot, normally you are lucky if half the 5 star players end up making a serious impact on the next level.

As for Rivals, they used to be the top dog in recruiting with no peers, but now they are slipping with Insiders adding alot of top analysts. I would go with Insiders rankings over Rivals, but in the end they are all crapshoots and opinions. Here's a pretty good list, though I don't agree with Sanchez as the top QB.

Allen Wallace formerly of superprep.com is an excellent asset to Insiders now, Jaime Newberg is a good one though an SEC homer, Scott Kennedy does a very nice job, Chris Pool, and MIller Safrit are all excellent analysts for The Insiders. I wouldn't trust Mike Farrell as far as I could throw him at Rivals, he's a big time Virginia homer and lets his bias get in the way all the time. Jeremy Crabtree of Rivals is the only one I trust/know now.

The MPC Computers bowl was amazing. UVA was up 21-0 and Fresno State came back to tie it in the 4th quarter and then again with 11 seconds to go. UVA hit a field goal in OT but Fresno State got a touchdown on the first play of their possesion. 37-34 Bulldogs. What a game.
