whitesox247
Just for conversation sake...Who do you consider the most underrated? I can name a few off the top of my head: Maggs, Pat Burell, Luis Castillo, Garrett Anderson, I'll list some more as I remember them... He's not too far away from Vladimir in terms of ability (Vlad is probably faster, and a better arm, but everything else is pretty even IMO), but you never hear much about Magglio, and he's in the 3rd largest market (Chicago). Chisoxfn
Maggs would be it. After that I'd probably say Troy Percival or Trevor Hoffman. I mean they get respect, but they are both phenomenal closers. Troy got his due this past season, and Trevor got his the one year the Padres went to the Series, but other then that, they don't get enough lovin. whitesox247
Im gonna add Abreu, Delgado, and Giles to that list. Not many casual baseball fans are aware of their greatness, simply because they're on non-contending teams.
witesoxfan
Guys like Tony Graffinino and Miguel Cairo and players like that don't get enough credit....they go to the field everyday not knowing if they'll even play, and if they play, they don't have a damn clue where they will play. And they still play good defense and put up good numbers. Also....setup men....guys like Octavio Dotel and Marte and JC Romero and Felix Rodriguez....guys that get the ball to the closer. Otherwise....Brian Giles is very underrated in the NL....and Maggs in the AL. Also....Mike Sweeney is underrated as well. He is a stud and can put up a good average. doubleM23
For his skills, Magglio Ordonez is by far the most underrated player in baseball. Last year he had one of the Top 5 seasons (offensively) in the Majors, but he doesn't have half the name recognition as other guys who have half the skills he does... At other positions... I'd have to say... C) A.J. Pierzynski 1B) Derrek Lee 2B) Adam Kennedy/Junior Spivey 3B) Mike Lowell SS) Aaron Boone (until last year)... Now either Jose Valentin or Carlos Guillen OF) Magglio Ordonez, Pat Burrell, and Jacque Jones P) Roy Oswalt (until last year, but still kind of), Roy Halladay, Hideo Nomo (yes), Matt Clement, Brian Lawrence, Octavio Dotel, Tim Wakefield, Keith Foulke

But imo Spivey is OVERrated.
clujer420
Aside from Magglio, there's 1 guy that I forgot about, and I don't think anybody has mentioned him yet. Rafael Palmeiro hits 40 HR and drives in 110 runs every year. You never even hear the guy's name mentioned unless Texas is playing. He'll be a first ballot HOF'er and will make no noise doing it. Excluding the strike year of '94, here are his last 10 seasons' HR's and RBI's 1993 - 37, 105 1995 - 39, 104 1996 - 39, 142 1997 - 38, 110 1998 - 43, 121 1999 - 47, 148 2000 - 39, 120 2001 - 47, 123 2002 - 43, 105 Average season - 41 HR with 120 RBI That is amazing. Jim Fainter
The Cubs traded Raffy for Mitch Williams. They didn't think Raffy had enough power for left field. What a combo Raffy and Grace would have made. Lou Brock, Raffy, Garland.................

I'm not a big statistics buff of old players such as Willie Mays and others like him, but I doubt it. That's a whole helluva lot of dingers and ribbies. Rowand44
How about Jarrod Washburn and Joel Pineiro for some pitchers in the al.

I looked up Sosa to see what his recent 7 or 8 seasons looked like, and they were actually much more impressive than Palmeiro if you look at averages.... Sosa's average over the past 8 years is 51 HR and 130 RBI Bonds, over the past 10 seasons, is 44 HR and 110 RBI Those 2 have received the most praise over the better part of the last decade, but as you can see, Rafael isn't far off from those numbers.
