He_Gawn
``You pitch the guy wide, inside, up or down and it doesn't matter,'' said Chicago starter Mark Buehrle, who allowed four of Suzuki's five singles Saturday. ``He didn't hit the ball hard -- it barely got out of the infield -- and he's still 5-for-5.'' ADVERTISEMENT Buehrle even tried an eephus pitch against Suzuki, who received a standing ovation from the Chicago crowd after his fifth hit in the ninth inning. ``In Japan, I saw that a lot,'' Suzuki said of the eephus pitch through a translator. ``But here, it's probably the first time. ``To give an ovation to an opposing player, I think they really love the game,'' he added. ``It really made me feel good to see that.'' Despite Suzuki's heroics, the Mariners dropped their fourth straight since a five-game winning streak.

Old Socks
That guy is so fun to watch. Ichiro. I hope he breaks the record. No offense to Ichiro or to you young guys who want to see the record broken, but I always hate to see really old, great records broken. Like George Sisler's. 257 hits in one year, when, in 1930? I remember as a kid hearing about that record, and I was impressed. Still am. I wish I had seen him play. A few years ago Manny Ramirez threatened Lou Gehrig's RBI record, and I pulled against him. Same with Maris in 1960. And Ricky. But Sisler's record of 257 hits is truly special. Over 70 years, and no one has touched it until this year. To say in a cavalier fashion that "I hope he breaks the record" without any thought to who set the record, when he set it, and what the hitting conditions were at the time, seems very short sighted and the product of someone who is not old enough to appreciate the history of the game. Nothing against Ichiro.
Rex Hudler
what is an eephus? think slow pitch softball, yet the pitch is thrown overhand....... it is just basically tossed up there, hoping that the slow speed and tantalizing look of the pitch will throw the batter off. This is a pitch best thrown once every blue moon. LOL
Old Socks
Ted Williams made the eephus pitch famous in an All-Star in 1939 or so when Rick Sewell threw one to Ted, and he hit it a country mile. That was entertainment. It was hardly the pitch of the day, Rex.

Nothing against Ichiro. ??? I'm only 16, and I'm also cheering for Ichiro to break the record. But to say I don't appreciate the game by saying I want the new guy to break the record? That's quite stupid. A player of Ichiro's caliber doesn't come along very often, and the way he gets his hits, it's simply amazing. He finds every little crack in the defense, and he'll just poke it through. Like last night - one hit, a soft bouncer up the middle, the next one, a high chopper over the first baseman - on natural grass! Records are made to be broken. I don't know, I just think your a little nuts to say that just because someone is cheering for Ichiro to break the record, that they don't appreciate the game... But whatever - to each his own, I guess. EDIT: And you contradict yourself. You say that it is truely special that Sisler got 257 hits, yet say you're rooting against Ichiro to get the record? If Ichiro got the record, would you not consider that even more special because he was able to break such an awesome record, or what? I like seeing records broken it so much more fun to watch games, I dunno JMO. Doesn't mean I have no appreciation for the game.

Soxfest
Sox fans are very smart, we give respect when due, not like the puppets on the other side of town and Ichiro is a good guy you can give standing ovation to.
