Phil Rogers: Rangers might ask for Garland

That's what I'm saying.  We've been talking for a month about how this team needs to built around pitching, defense, situational hitters, etc and to get away from the power right handed hitters.  So ... everyone thinks we should trade a good young pitcher with a very high upside for Rh hitting, high K, defensive liablity slugger.

Makes sense to me.

What has to be considered is that the sox will still need some power guys. Soriano gives a team both speed at the top of the order [something Ozzie has wanted] and the ability to hit HR's. His defense is the biggest question mark. Santana was able to work with Jose and improve his d the last 2 years. Who knows if Soriano is able to correct his errors. If he's too much of a butcher, the the sox would be better off w/o him.

Yet I still think Soriano is more valuable than Garland. Just maybe for a different team.

I honestly think JG is done in a White Sox uniform. We have our top three already in place, and IMHO we will sign another quality pitcher. Diaz will be involved in next season, somehow -- and not as a reliever. Diaz will either be traded, in Charlotte, or our fifth starter IMHO. Garland is expendable. Soriano is a special player, it is not just any player we are talking about here. He would be nice at the top of our order with Aaron. I would love to have Soriano at 2B, with Uribe at SS. That would be nice. We would need to deal one of Frank, CLee, or Konerko in order for this to be too realistic, as we could possibly only have Ben Davis in the lineup from the left-side of the plate. This is one deal I would do for sure, especially if they are not asking for too much more.

The problem I have with that scenario is what happens if Diaz doesn't perform as the 5th starter next year? Who else do we turn to, Josh Stewart? Arnie Munoz again? I would rather keep Garland, bump him down to the 5th spot in the rotation, and sign Odalis Perez or Matt Clement to be a #2 or #3 starter in our rotation.

Yall who are clammoring for Soriano must be really bumming that Valentin won't be back next year.

Makes sense to me to trade valuable pitching for a bad fielding, poor OBP infielder.

Since when is Garland considered "valuable pitching"?

If valuable is synonamous (sp?) with "inconsistent", then I guess Garland could be considered valuable..

Despite the bad year Garland has had, he's still recorded double digits for wins, which is a lot better than other 4th starters in this league. Alfonso Soriano is a younger version of Jose Valentin, only he'll steal more bases, and hit 10 more home runs. Plus he'll be making $8 million dollars next season in arbitration, if we trade for him, you can kiss the likes of us signing Vizquel or Koskie goodbye. And the fans in Texas were booing him last night as well, so take that FWIW.

I dont understand the thinking of most of the people on this board who think we are a big market team, who is going to pick up these huge free agents in the offseason. Forget about getting the marquee names in the top or the order. If you want to improve the sox lineup, check out the black hole at the bottom of the order. To succeed in our below average division, with below average money, you need to imrove average players. How many people saw Paulie's offensive production coming??? Or how much did it cost us to bring in Maggs and Carlos??? These were not huge free agent pickups. The sox will never be the cubs or the yankees, phillies or red sox. We need to develop a team, not buy one

If Garland has no value, as it was implied in this thread, why are we hearing that thr Rangers are going to offer a "special player" for him. There's something here that just doesn't compute.

Personally, I think a lot of people are under estimating Garland's trade value and drastically over estimating Soriano's value as a ballplayer.
