AssHatSoxFan
I couldn't watch the game down here at U of I but I saw that Garland pitched in relief and I assume this is due to Freddy starting? Diaz also came in too which surprised me I guess. So how bad was Garland in his work?

Gene Honda Civic
Diaz should have never been used -- He threw 98 pitches on Sunday... If he was pitching in the rotation he wouldn't even have been due to throw on the side until tomorrow... I stopped watching as soon as diaz was pulled -- I don't understand why he was the first arm called from the pen.

qwerty
Ozzie was really smoking the joint today. Has to be the worst managed game of the year. I can't think of one worse.
fathom
Ozzie's whole "go out, get drunk, forget about it" routine is one thing. But throwing a young pitcher in relief two days after throwing almost 100 pitches is just stupid. There's absolutely no reason to risk injury to any of our pitchers. Diaz still looked better in his 1 1/3 innings than Garland did in his 1/3 inning, though that heater to strike out Soriano was nice. Wish he challenged hitters more like that instead of serving up beachballs over the heart of the plate.
Rex Hudler
Garland's day to start was tomorrow. Since Garcia is going tomorrow night, I imagine that Garland will go on Friday or Saturday at the latest. They probably just wanted to get an inning or two out of him to keep him "sharp". Now figure out why he put a guy at 2B in his first Major League game EVER, who had played that position in 422 days!
YASNY
I was wondering if, possibly, this relief appearance for Garland was a "message" from Ozzie.

The guy plays short all year and we bring him up and put him at 2nd? Especially when Uribe has bee playing 2nd so much this year. :headshake

Exactly.......... why do anything to make the road easier? Make them take the bumpy road. Those that survive will be hardened and ready to go. Toss the others aside. southsider2k5
For some reason Ozzie is managing like the Sox are still in this. I really wish they would make the transition over to playing for next year. This team isn't going to make it, and they are missing a golden opportunity to give these kids a month of development. Some guys just shouldn't be playing much at all anymore, such as Timo, Jose, and Robbie. We know what they can do. We need to see as many AB's and IP's for the rookies. I'm not sure where you see evidence of this, I see just the opposite and that's a good thing. Yes, some of his moves last night would be considered mistakes IF we were in the playoff race. We are not and we were down by like 8 runs in the 6th, so who cares? Part of it is psychological too, he doesn't want anyone on this team to feel too comfortable or like they are a 'sure thing' for 2005. I'm all for trying some different things. Try Gload at 1st or Burke at 3rd, does Valdez play the outfield at all?...he looks like a skinny, speedy f'er. Face it folks, it's been a pre spring training 2005 for about a week now, I hope we see a lot more.
babybearhater
Other than those rants, I think that Arnie did an awesome job in relief, I figure that was the best outing I have seen him in yet, I think the long relief spot could be his next year

Yes, some of his moves last night would be considered mistakes IF we were in the playoff race. I think if Ozzie were managing for next year, he wouldn't have even dreamed about bringing Diaz, and espesially Garland out of the pen. He would have gone straight to Munoz, let him pitch as long as possible, and then use Baj, and then fill in the blanks with whatever innings were left. Using Garland and Diaz was very similar to the way Jack McKean used Dontrelle Willis and Josh Beckett in the World Series. Ozzie managed the first 3 innings like there was no tommorrow. Then in the middle innings he gave in and went to the other guys.

Garland, I can understand after looking back and realizing he got bumped from his normal start day by Garcia.
LauraJ14
Did Ozzie give any reason why Valdez makes his first start at 2nd base instead of shortstop where he has been playing all year? Sometimes I think Jerry Manuel is still managing!
AngelasDaddy0427
For the last few weeks it seemed like Ozzie was starting to learn from his mistakes and was starting to finally get over some of the things that plauged his first year... Then this game happened... You are left speechless. There is no reason for Jon to be used in the bullpen here. There is no reason to play Valdez at SS when both Harris and Uribe are more accustomed to playing 2B. It's the kind of thing that just makes you want to shake your head and turn off your tv.
