Another team interested in Maggs

From the Washington Post,

In addition to the $18 million coming off the books, team sources indicate the Orioles plan to sever ties with Palmeiro and Jay Gibbons after the season, a potential savings of another $8 million to $9 million.

According to those sources, the Orioles again plan to be aggressive in the free agent market, with their top targets including right-handed pitcher Carl Pavano and right fielder Magglio Ordoñez. . . .

Gibbons could be a decent young RF replacement. Why would they want to cut ties with him? He has been injured a tad this year.

Gibbons would make about $4 million next season, which is what Everett will be making I think, or about $4.5 million. Gibbons' numbers this season are .216 with 9 HR's. OUCH.

Don't be so quick to jump on the free agent signing band wagon. Gibbons is NOT a decent replacement. Look at his stats. It may be that we give Borchard a chance to produce or be gone and also start to develop our own. Pitching is where I think we will need the free agent money spent. The Sox rave about Grilli. Nine hits and 5 runs in 5 innings? Nothing to rave about. A long reliever he might be, but I am just not certain yet about his ability to be the every fifth day starter. Diaz maybe, but he could be in the bullpen too. I see a reshaping of that bullpen crew and an addition of a power closer along with another starter to be our priorities. I would also like to see a run at Maggs made.

Yeah we do have a lot of questions for next year. I personally say, start Cotts, Grilli, and Diaz for the rest of the year. At least give Cotts another start or two before the end of the year. Grilli and Diaz are already part of the rotation.

Cotts is not stretched out, he could easily get hurt if all of a sudden you start asking him to throw 80 pitches.

We talk about this all the time on this site, and yet we continually see posts about "let's start Cotts". It's not that simple.

Yeah that's true, but that doesn't mean he can't go 3 innings. Let him do that.

Are you a fan of giving Cotts a chance to start next year?

We had more question marks going into THIS year then we will next year.

Coming into this year, we had no 2Bman, no CFer, Big Mo and Sandy behind the plate(and they hit about .240 combined last year), a rotation that consisted of Buehrle-Loaiza-Garland-Schoenweis-Wright(so basically 2 holes), we had 1 real solid reliever we knew was going to be good(and even Marte has been shaky this year), and then there were question marks in Crede, Garland, and Konerko, along with having one of the best(if not the best) bench coach retiring before the season, along with a rookie manager who had NEVER managed a game before.

Had you told me before the season that we would lose Maggs and Frank for about a combined 200 games, I would have said that this team would finish with fewer then 70 wins.

And to think, we will finish .500, atleast, and probably, not possibly, better then that.

Take that into consideration before you talk about our holes.

Even with Maggs I don't think that'll make Baltimore better, he need a stronger pitching staff. Their 3 power hitting aquisations didn't work out as many would have hoped even though Tejada is a good player.

Javy lopez has been solid. So really only one of their pick-ups have done nothing. And even palmeiro onb is not terrible.

i don't quite remember it that way. the only real question mark was cf.

if i remember right and i am admitting that i may be wrong, (b/c i been a whole of wrong this weekend), but a lot of people were confident on willie at 2b, big mo doing well behind the plate, and i remember that many said the rotation was very good esp if sho comes thru.
