LDF
so you think because he couldn't outperform Mark Grace and Todd Helton, he hasn't earned a chance? not if it means trading a know quality for an unknown one. i want a gm or manager saying "this kid has shown that he can handle the position and it was trying to find playing time for him. we had to do something to give him that position." Rowand44
Maybe he isn't, but give him September playing all day and lets see. Its not quite a full season, but if he holds strong for the entire month, I'd say its a risk worth taking. You have Konerko at a very high value, plus like I mentioned in my scenario, Everett will probably be here and while I'm not a fan of him starting, him off the bench and potentially first base if Gload flops is a good choice. What I see from Gload is a good, smart hitter, and that alone should make him sucessful in the back of the lineup. Gload has hit everywhere he's gone in the minors and now he's finally getting a legit shot at the major league level. Add JD Drew and replace Timo and everyone else in RF with Gload at 1B and Furcal at SS, Cruz on the pen and all of a sudden I think the team got a heck of a lot better. Of course this could be considered far fetched, but if they move Konerko, they aren't going to not add another bat, they are just going to do it at another position and hopefully a left handed bat. Thomas and Drew, two .400 OBP guys and thats as close to a guarantee as it gets if the two of them are healthy. The crazy ideas of Jason Gage. I'm sorry, your ideas are damn good but we all know that stuff won't happen, unfortunately, however it would be amazing if it did.

I'm sorry, your ideas are damn good but we all know that stuff won't happen, unfortunately, however it would be amazing if it did. Hell, I thought this was one of my more realistic ones. Only trouble is it means the Sox would sign 3 FA's (starting pitcher, JD Drew, setup man) plus make a trade. We know the Sox make trades, but spending about 20 mill in free agency typically isn't their style. Of course the key is for the Braves to want Konerko and to not do good in the playoffs. Hell, has anyone thought about Jaret Wright? He could come a little cheaper and really seems to be understanding how to pitch. Of course its a risk. CubsSuck1
Actually, this could work out pretty good, depending if Gload can perform evryday, and Konerko's money is used wisely. Before this season, PK was MIA for a season and a half. Paulie can hit for power, but it doesn't seem he can create as many runs as other players. Also I really couldn't tell you much about Gload's speed, but its probably better than Kong's. Frank should be back in the lineup next year and he should be decent. I would be pleased with him as our main power hitter next year. Being a Home Run Ballclub hasn't won us the division 4 years and running. With the cash freed up by Konerko and Magglio, if he doesn't sign, I believe we have over $20 million to spend, plus any more budget cash we are given by JR. With $25-30 million approx., we could get 3 great players-- possibly a starter, reliever, and an outfeilder.
AngelasDaddy0427
Ross Gload is a good backup but isn't ready to be a starter... Who becomes our backup 1B/Utility Player...
YASNY
About a week or so ago, this idea of Gload being the starting 1b was broached and gave it a thumbs down. However, I have been thinking about this since and think it is potentially doable. Ok, to start, Ross Gload is not the hitter Konerko is. That's a given. If he was better than PK, he'd be starting now. So, you take a loss with a straight Gload for Konerko replacement. Duly noted and taken into consideration. To measure how much of a loss, just look at PK's impressive stats. Gload does give you somethings that Kong doesn't. Better defense for starters. It seems to be a generally accepted fact that Ross is better with the leather than Kong. You get some speed also. Or, more accurately, one less base clogger. What you also gain by trading Konerko is a combination of players and available cash. And when it comes down to it, this should be the deciding factor in this arguement. It depends on which players they get in a trade and which players they spend that money on. Do the combination of Gload plus these acquired players make the Sox a better team? It's not difficult to imagine a scenario to where this would be the case. So, do you trade Konerko and put Gload in as the starting firstbaseman? I don't know, but it certainly a scenario that should be considered and examined. Float Konerko's name out there and see what kind of offers you get. Any GM worth his salt should do at least this much.
Gene Honda Civic
I just looked at something that caught my eye.... JT snow is going to be a FA -- He's putting together a huge season while he's been healthy in the second half -- I had been secretly hoping that KW would sign him and ship out pauly to save money and add a lefty... Well I just took a look at Snow's career #'s -- I was surprised... Snow's Career #'s - .267/.358/.431 Gload this season - .304/.358/.433 Ross is not going to take the walk like JT, but I think RG has a good eye, and with regular playing time will walk a bit more. I think he has a great chance at putting up Above average numbers... Here's the AL average this season for first basemen -- .265/.345/.445 Ross's main goal this month should be to prove that he has the batting eye to meet that .08 IsoD. I think as long as you make sure that you don't have Below league average players at all positions, you're going to win a lot of ball games. beck72
If somehow the Sox are serious about this (doubt it), then they better have a good righthanded hitter on the bench, a guy who is proven and can play 1B. I think two guys who would fit the bill would be FA's Tony Clark and Travis Lee [Lee might be more expensive]. Lee might be a LH hitter though. But a LH who can hit both RHP and LHP decently would be OK, seeing how RH the sox bats are.

beck72
I say keep your best three hitters in tact and then evaluate the rest. Given that, who are they, in no particular order--Frank, Rowand, Lee and Konerko. Keep one of Pk and Lee to go with Aaron and Frank then you re-evaluate. My take on Lee and Pk are they are very similar hitters [RH, power, streaky] and fielders [solid, not gold glovers]. Trading one to fill other holes [in pitching, hitting, young AA or AAA prospects] makes sense. I'm all for getting guys like Koskie and Vizquel. But if the Sox keep the $8 mill salary of Lee or PK then they probably can't get a top notch SP and bullpen help. Also, if the Sox hitting woes are solved by letting Jose and Maggs go, are we to believe these two guys were to blame for everything? [i don't count Crede because he's been with the Sox for 2 years in a supporting role, rather than the "core"] I don't think so. IMO, one of the other two guys should be part of the purging and re-tooling.

3E8
Something else to ponder. Konerko home: .310/1.076 away: .243/.721 Gload home: .280/.735 away: .326/.843 Konerko costs $8,000,000. Gload costs $302,000. TEST THAT TRADE VALUE KW!
Gene Honda Civic
1 season does not make a career. Gload was a career .304 hitter in the minor leagues. He also slugged and impressive .495 -- A couple of years spent in the hitters league PCL, and one in the bandbox at charlotte may skew that, but he's always hit a lot of doubles, that's not going to change in the bigs.
