israel4ever
Who would you say is/was the most underrated Sox player that you have seen play?
farmteam
That I've seen play? Dunno, MAYBE Robin Ventura. Ever? Probably Luke Appling. That's if you mean underrated on a national level. If you mean just within Sox circles, then bah, I have no clue.
israel4ever
I always liked Lamar Johnson (1B). Played in the 70s - 80s. I believe he was a career .300 hitter.

Hatchetman
i think eddie collins played more for the sox than any other team. he's a upper echelon HOF'er.
The Beast
Aaron Rowand current. Appling all-time

southsider2k5
Keith Foulke. I couldn't' believe the hard time that guy got before. If he was here last year we win the division, easy.
Rowand44
It's sad but true, Frank Thomas has been pretty underrated his whole career by the media and some fans.

southsider2k5
It's sad but true, Frank Thomas has been pretty underrated his whole career by the media and some fans. NOt until his big injury in 2001. No one underrated the guy before that. He pretty much was a consensus at one of the 3-5 best players in the game before that. SoxAce
IMO, Harold Baines was very underrated. I would say Aaron is underated right now.
AngelasDaddy0427
Rowand most obviously. Even when it should of been obvious to even a first grader that the guy would become great people still bashed him.

Yossarian
Billy Pierce was my idol as a kid, along with Minnie Minoso and Nellie Fox. Nobody ever got less recognition for his accomplishments in the long time I've followed baseball. Nobody was continually matched up against the opponents ace and got less run support doing so. Still he managed to win 211 games and pitch 193 complete games and 38 shutouts. He went 7-2 against Bob Lemon and 8-6 against the great Whitey Ford, 9-6 if you include his WS victory against him in 62. In an age of specialization people forget how versatile Billy was. He posted 32 saves and also played 1st base twice while a new pitcher was brought in to face one batter. They don't do that sort of "outside the box" strategy in today's game. Pierce got pitifully little support in HOF voting while others with similar stats are enshrined. One more thing. Billy Pierce was exciting as hell to watch. It was a real treat coming to the park and watching him pitch. Billy Pierce is one of the most underappreciated players in the history of the game. You'll never meet a classier old school gentleman either.

greg775
Jerry Dybzinski. Just kidding. I still won't forgive him for that baserunning blunder that cost the Sox a win over Baltimore with Britt Burns pitching the game of his life. Most underrated ever?? --Ralph Garr setting the table that one magical season. --Pudge Fisk. --Chet Lemon. He was damn good. --Ken Kravec (again just kidding).
