Texsox
And Tex, there you have your casual fan. The Sox started losing, he quit going. Go look at the Sox game by game attendance, and tell me that attendance wouldn't plummet if we moved to the AL East. But you said a the team could make a ton of money with a $30 million payroll. The team did not have to be competitive to make money. I agree with you.
israel4ever
It depends, I am going around saying that I have been a fan of the movie since 1972 critisizing its management company, production costs, actors in the movie, and how many people pay to see the movie OR am I just a fan who likes the movie and the entertainment I get out of it? I am a huge fan of Godfather and Godfather II...Godfather III was terrible...do I own GF III on DVD...NO WAY!!! That's the point.
babybearhater
I don't know about you guys, but, I only have x amount of money for my "entertainment budget". I am not willing to throw it away on a below average product...it's that simple! Take some money from the hooker and porn budget, and there is a double play season ticket package right there, problem solved!!!!!!!!! Lonely Lonely people OUT
Texsox
I am a huge fan of Godfather and Godfather II...Godfather III was terrible...do I own GF III on DVD...NO WAY!!! That's the point. There's a lady I have to deal with at a supplier. I find her mildly offensive, but I do not complain because I really do not care. If I cared, I would complain. The Royals suck this year, are any of us complaining about their organization? Does that mean we somehow love the Royals?

Texsox
That's funny. Way to bring immaturity and stupidity into the discussion. We started this discussion with something that was reported on WSI. Can we get any stupider or immature than that? Everyone knows the hooker and porn budget is absolute and cannot be reduced
babybearhater
I am a huge fan of Godfather and Godfather II...Godfather III was terrible...do I own GF III on DVD...NO WAY!!! That's the point. These are not movies. This is a sports team, one of the oldest, playing america;s favorite pastime. Baseball got America through several wars, as well as financial harships and terrorist attacks. It is not a simple restaurant or DVD. When you walk into a restaurant or other business, it is not the same feeling as walking in a ballpark. This is the place you want to take your kids to introduce them to a part of history. For many of us, this is what has made us who we are. I grew up in a household full of whitesox games and events. I can chronicle my life through many of the seasons of the Sox. If all I cared about was the popular product, I would be peeing on my hands on the north side. The reason that many of us are sox fans, especially in a city overrun by fairweather fans, is because we love the team for not only its future, but for its history. We love the winning ugly teams, we love the black sox not matter how bad the scandal (and the curse). We really do think good guys wear black, and we think that cubs fans suck. You cannot compare a bseball team, and an organization to anything else in the world, because I guarantee you that a restaurant did not help the city of New York recover from 9/11. And keep the morale of the country up when we were at war. Baseball is baseball, and the sox are the sox, and no matter what happens with the organization, or what you think helps profits. I will always love the sox.

Jake
If we competed in the AL East, that's because you're a great team. If you compete in the AL Central, thats because you're in a weak division.

I have to work so I can pay for stuff I really need. I was joking, I just got out of school last year, and bought my first personal set of season tickets-great feeling. If you really want to get some cheap seats for the game, get off the red line and there are usually 10-20 people who will sell you decent seats for 20 bucks or less. Otherwise do what I had to sdo when I went to school in ohio, watch it on the internet---now thats die hard
YASNY
I can certainly see JR advocating a switch of divisions. Competing against the Yankees and Red Sox would make a more attractive product, and ... as was stated earlier, would put the Sox more into the national spotlight. This is right up JR's alley. Texsox
So far all the talk is about guaranteed income and franchise value for Baltimore.
DBAHO
JR denies the rumor; Board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf adamantly denied a rumor claiming he would seek to move the Sox to the American League East in the wake of the Montreal Expos being relocated to Washington D.C., a move expected to be announced by Thursday. Through team spokesman Scott Reifert, Reinsdorf said a move to the East by the Sox was never even discussed. Under such a scenario, the White Sox not only would have to compete with the Red Sox and Yankees — and their obscene payrolls — but an increased number of 6:05 p.m. starts likely would negatively impact television ratings. I will always love the sox. This was (is) a very well written piece...I cannot disagree with anything you have said. That is why I have always said that JR and his partners cannot (should not) treat ownership of the Whitesox as they would a regular business. Sometimes you have to forego some (if not all) of your profit margin to satisfy the wants (needs) of your fans. For example, would you rather see a Sox team with a $75 million payroll, finish in 3rd place, but know that ownership has made $25 million in profits, OR, would you rather have a Sox team with a $95 million payroll, be a serious playoff (WS) contender, and have the Sox "only" pocket $5 million in profits. (I know these numbers are not accurate, I am just using them to make a point.) In business, the goal is maximization of profits...this should not be the goal of baseball team ownership. Plus, you'd get 19 games vs the Yanks and Red Sox each, 8 or 9 at home. Plus the Cubs still. Those are our biggest series. IMHO attendence would raise.
