Scwible
Story What the hell is going on in this world. This has to be one of the most retarded things I have heard in a while. Getting disqualified for having a little yellow rubberband thing on your arm. jeess....
Queen Prawn
I can understand where they are coming from. Jewelry isn't allow because serious injuries can and do occur. I used to run X-country in HS and I remember several people (in practice, not an actual race) hurt themselves because the jewelry got caught on something while they run. I realize it is hard to imagine, but even a braclet can become entangled. Do I think they should have come down on them, no. They should have asked them to remove it before the race (will 15 minutes without cause that much problems) and then if the student didn't, disqualify them. And no, watches are not allowed to be worn during the race for many reasons, at least not by IHSA rules (maybe in VA they can, but not in IL), unless those have been changed recently. I totally agree! I ran X-Country as well and the rules were the same for the IHSAA (Indiana). In my experience, though, the Judges had a history of waiting until the race was over to DQ people without informing them prior to the race. I was in a relay once and we had 3 different colors of socks, so we were DQed. I guess you can have one person different than the other three, but not two. Total BS. Not a safety issue like jewelry. I just couldn't understand as an 8th grader how that made our team run faster. . It was the Conference meet and the Judge was from the 2nd place team. BS! :fyou
Queen Prawn
For us, before the races started, the coach would make sure we were all wearing the same basic uniform (shorts and jersey) and no one had jewelry on (always one or two trying to run with earrings, watches etc and he would take them and hold them during the race). I don't think IHSA (IL) has a rule that socks, undershirts and leggings has to match for the whole team though.
Texsox
I cannot remember anyone getting DQ'd in High School or College for jewelery. It also states that someone was DQ's for an elastic hair tie. I know that wasn't a DQ, or I would have been nailed at least once. IIRC watches were ok to wear in college. I recall at least one finish line picture of me stopping my watch as I went through the finish chute. In our conference championship in 1981 most of us wore black socks as a tribute to the Kenyan distance runners. A couple guys did not. No one was DQ'd for that. SuperSteve
Um, I have no problem with them being DQ'd. No problem at all. I just dont get the yellow bracelet trend. So many people wear them, and some make it seem like they're doing something for cancer. Well, they're not.

So many people wear them, and some make it seem like they're doing something for cancer. Well, they're not. The braclet have become a fashion trend for many who have no tie to anyone with cancer and/or have no idea that it's truely raising money for cancer research, they just like it because everyone else has one. Though like myself I know why I have mine, I wanted to donate money to a fund that would help cure cancer and thats how alot of other people feel too. Even the morons that have em and have no clue what they are doing with the money they used to buy the band are helping cure cancer. You can't say they're not helping anyting because so much money has been raised by these things it's crazy. I think I heard on ESPN radio that something like 12 million has been raised by these alone. ALONE. Now thats alot of money to a good cause, to help fight a good fight against a disease that can hit anyone at anytime. To take DQ someone for these wearing these is ridiculous. Whats even worse though is that they did it after the race was over. The right thing to do would of been to say, hey all you can't wear those, it's not with the uniform. When I played in high school never did I ever see anything like this happen with people who had something on that wasn't supposed to be. The officials simply said to take it off or your out, take your pick. OK, my rant is over, back to work for me.

The rules in most organized high school sport is no jewelry and coaches (at least coaches worth their salt) explain to student athletes that anything not of the uniform is considered jewerly. (At least with the IHSA IL it is.) They knew the rules as I am sure it wasn't their first race. Judges don't have time to go through crowds of runners (I remember being at several races were there were more than a 1000 runners) before a race, but when they are entering the chute single file, a yellow band around the wrist is going to stick out. I could understand this better i guess if it was only one person. Making an example of them so that others who wear them would think before they before the event start. When I was in high school not to long ago, the IHSA refs and any other official I ever had in one of my game would come up to the person and warn them of it, as I said before. Now that there are so many runners at the start as you said, it is so much easier to see them as they come down the chute, they should of stepped them all aside(including the coaches) and anyone else that could have had anything remotely considered jewelry(I consider these remotely jewelry) and told them how they felt of these and say if they see any of this again they will be DQ-ed.
