israel4ever
well i dont have them with me but lowell always has a strong first half and usually sucks during the stretch so thats kind of concern 2... also i thought ozzie wanted small ball..... what would really be cool is if we signed placido polanco and vizquel and then have crede and uribe battle it out at 3B We 'd really be contenders then, with palanco/vizqual and crede/uribe. :headshake That's almost like having Jeter and ARod! Face facts, Crede sucks, and he isn't getting any better. If the best we can do is Crede/Uribe/Vizquel/Palanco...then let's all enjoy 3rd place. Second, how are we going to trade for a Jeter or A-Rod. Vizquel is one of the best SS's on the FA market this off-season, and probably fits our needs the most. And the Twinkies don't hav these type of big names either, and they've done just fine in this division over the past few seasons.

It's not about winng the AL Central, it's about contending for the WS! We cannot get Arod or Jeter, but we can get Renteria, Cabrera, Glaus or Lowell! We cannot get Arod or Jeter, but we can get Renteria, Cabrera, Glaus or Lowell! We've scored enough home runs in the past few seasons, and that hasn't gotten us anywhere. Cabrera is basically a Vizquel clone, who will probably resign in Boston, while Glaus and Lowell would just add more power numbers, when our real need is for another top starter and closer. You are right, we need a starter (or 2) and a closer. But, we are VERY weak at SS and 3B as well. These positions need an upgrade!
DBAHO
You are right, we need a starter (or 2) and a closer. But, we are VERY weak at SS and #B as well. These positions need an upgrade! Juan Uribe went .275 with 20 HR's and 75 RBI's I believe. I would hardly call SS a weak position, if Uribe is going to play their everyday next season. But if we sign Vizquel, we move Uribe to 2nd, and have a very nice infield, that most teams would like.

DBAHO
True. I think we can (should) do better. It's not a matter of getting better in those positions. We'll get much better in the pitching department this offseason, which is what this team needs the most. There are enough good starters in the FA market, that we should definitely be able to sign someone good.
israel4ever
Assuming we can nail down good 4th and 5th starters, and get a closer, our line up is still suspect, IMO. We don't know what we'll get, if anything, from our C, 2B, SS, 3B and CF (assuming aRow is moved to RF), offensively or defensively. If you look at the old baseball adage, "strength up the middle", the Sox are average, at best.

If you look at the old baseball adage, "strength up the middle", the Sox are average, at best. 2B and SS will be fine with Uribe and Vizquel, if that's the path the Sox decide to take. Unless we sign Beltran which ain't gonna happen, Rowand will stick at CF. KW has said he will look for a catcher possibly, but the only 2 top guys on the market are Jason Varitek (who's a lock to resign in Boston) and Paul LoDuca from the Marlins. LoDuca could be had for 3 years $21 million apparently.
israel4ever
Or we can trade for Jason Kendall. (Isn't Mike Metheney a FA?) (I'd love to have LaDuca on the Sox!!!)
Punch and Judy Garland
Between Kendall, Metheny, and Lo Duca-I'd take Kendall. You can hit him first or second and he never k's. I beliee he has three or four years left at 10 per, but it's widely reported that the Pirates might have to eat half to make any trade amenable. I don't think we'd have to give up a whole lot for him as Pittsburgh is desperate to purge much of that salary.

WHarris1
I agree. Also, keep in mind though, wasn't LaDuca on the Marlins with Ozzie? No, he was on the Dodgers. Florida picked him up this year at the deadline.

beck72
LoDuca is ARB eligible and will be resigned by FLA. FLA doesn't have a C

If our IF next season includes Polanco and Vizquel, I dunno about the rest of you - but I'll be very pleased. I know there are a couple people on this board (qwerty, to name one) who really like Polanco, but adding he and Vizquel would be great. Both are solid contact hitters, and would be definite upgrades. Along that list of IF candidates, I'd love to add a guy like Mark Bellhorn or Bill Mueller. I assume that they will move one of the two with Youkilis at third, but I could be wrong... Rex Hudler
Im also a fan of Poloanco. Had him on my fantasy squad all season. We would have no worries at 2b. Can he lead off? lol

I've always thought he was 3B, but on this board, I've seen secondbase and shortstop as well. Is he super-utility?
Punch and Judy Garland
Bellhorn is good for about 180 K's so I don't see him hitting higher than 7th in a balanced lineup. He hits two for the bosox but I don't think it's a very good idea. He's got good pop but probably doesn't really fit with our molding identity. True, he does strike out a lot, but he also walks equally well, which is why I like him. Then again, you're probably right - he doesn't seem to fit into the 'Ozzieball' mold, so he probably wouldn't be pursued (then again, Ozzie does like versataille players - and IIRC, Bellhorn can play a variety of position). I like a lot of players from that Boston team - Damon, Mueller, and Bellhorn, specifically.

Is he super-utility? Majority of the time he plays second and is servicable at third. I think the cardinals experimented with him at short and were not really pleased. If our infield contains Polanco and Vizquel, then my vote would be to trade Crede for something simply because I want Uribe to get at bats.
