CanOfCorn
According to the Boston Herald, free-agent-to-be Carl Pavano is interested in signing with the Red Sox. "They are one of the teams I believe would be a good fit for Carl," Pavano's agent, Scott Shapiro, told the newspaper. "Carl grew up in Connecticut and his family is right there. He would be coming home to some extent.'' Pavano went 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 2004, pitching 222 1/3 innings. He will turn 29 next year and is in line for a hefty pay raise from his $3.8 million base salary this season. I'm guessin' we ain't gettin' him. beck72
All the teams with the most cash to spend [bos and NYY] will be looking to sign him. I don't think the Sox were at the top of his wish list
WilliamTell
haha isn't Pavano already east to begin with.....well southeast. Anyways, yeah he won't be coming here probably.

Flash Tizzle
I'm guessin' we ain't gettin' him. -Why you so pessimistic? The offseason hasn't even begun! -There's plenty of time between now and spring training for KW to sign him. -KW always makes a big move before Soxfest! -Increased revenue from ticket sales and the Comcast deal should make us buyers in the FA market! -Not every team can begin a bidding war with Carl Pavano...or Pedro Martinez...or Carlos Beltran...or Brad Radke....or Odalis Perez. -Minnesota lost [insert name], we can still win the division by default! Thought I'd list all the various excuses you'll hear when JR sits on his ass, and people calm themselves with these false beliefs.
EvilJester99
Of course they are going to say that. They naturally assume Steinbrenner is going to buy him since his team choked it in the ALCS. They will put the Yankmees for every big FA out there. Which he probably will end up there but I'm just sayin.
JoshPR
I'm guessin' we ain't gettin' him. WOW!!! The world is going to End.. ESPN' Insider didn't say the Yankees are going to get him or at least go after him.. I'm shocked!! ESPN not helping the yanks with marketing there
Butter Parque
I think people on these boards have to start understanding that no big-name free agent would ever want to come to the Chicago White Sox. I'm surprised anyone outside of Chicago even knows who they are. (obviously I do) I think people need to realize that no one cares about a team that hasn't made the playoffs since 2000. Why would a big-name free agent want to come to a team like this. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but from an out-of-towner like myself, you guys have to realize that nobody really can give 2 craps about the white sox. Using your logic, people like Pudge Rodriguez wouldn't go to the Tigers, or why would a guy like Miguel Tejada go to Baltimore? They haven't been to the playoffs in a while, and with NY and Boston in that division, they probably won't go. Money talks. Then again, I expect something like that to come from you... :rolly
Butter Parque
Exactly, and the white sox don't like to spend money, Detroit and Baltimore gave out money last offseason and were active in the FA market. They had some nice results during the season too. So again I ask you, why in the hell would these types of players want to come to the white sox? No money, no prestige, no fame. Yeah, Baltimore had great results - a seven game improvement that got them third place in the AL East! We had more results than Baltimore with limited funds. Why would a guy come to the White Sox? There's a lot of reasons. Chicago is a great place to live. Visiting players love coming to Chicago. It's a very appealing city. Ozzie has his ways as well. Garcia being just one example, with most likely, a couple more guys this offseason coming due to him. Plus, there's the thought of a challenge. Any smart player should realize that if he is able to lead this team to the World Series, they will absolutely own this city. Again - you're logic makes zero sense. BTW - Tell me again how payroll increases over the past couple of years does not constitute 'spending money' to you? Hell, if we had you as a GM or owner, Eric Milton would be the ace of this team... Chisoxfn
They would come to Chicago for a few reasons. A, its a major market so they have a definate shot at some endorsements or commercials. Thats if your a big name player, ie Beltran. Although I realize baseball endorsements aren't nearly as lucractive as basketball ones. B, its a great city. I think it was rated as one of the favorite visiting cities to come to C, its a nice ballpark with good facilities and they train in Arizona. Meaning shorter travel time. Its not too important, but definately a bit of a factor. D, for a hitter its a great hitters park. E, the team has a pretty diverse group and it seems like a great place for dominicans and other nationalities to play because of the diversity, both of the team and the city. However, the Sox aren't likely to out bid everyone, which makes it tough, unless a guy is from around here, nor are the Sox likely to get a guy willing to take a discount to have a shot at the series. YASNY
-Increased revenue from ticket sales and the Comcast deal should make us buyers in the FA market! I'd like to see just one link showing that the Comcast deal will increase revenues for the '05 White Sox. People keep saying this, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that this is a fact. Can anybody help out here?

I have seen talk that the $$ the Sox get from their new radio deal will be much lower than the previous one. Apparently the Sox had a really sweet deal and that day is gone. The way I understood it the Sox will probably break even on it, but in the long term have a shot at making more money. I think their is a lot of uncertainty in regards to the profit breakdown of the station.
Chisoxfn
No links here... but why would the Sox have done it, if it wouldn't increase revenues? Because they weren't going to get an offer similar to the one they had with FSN so this was the best option because in the long term it could turn into something rather profitable. Look what the YES network has done for Steinbrenner and now the Mets are trying it. This isn't quite that, but its still a network of teams teaming up. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if the Sox made a little less out of the gates with this new deal.
