Jaret Wright might be available again. From rotoworld...

The Yankees intend to get more opinions on Jaret Wright's shoulder after the right-hander reportedly failed his physical.

Newsday believes the Yankees want out of the deal, which they may now consider ill-advised regardless of exactly what is going on with his shoulder. A source with knowledge of Wright's medical records told TSN's Ken Rosenthal that Wright was cleared to pitch by Dr. Lewis Yocum, and that his MRI "looks better than Pedro's, better than (Bartolo) Colon's, better than (Kelvim) Escobar's." I'm sure the Yanks are dropping out. They figured out they could get Pavano, jumped on it, still want to add Milton and potentially RJ and are going to do or try to do just that.

They are just shooting the bull on this mri. I'm guessing you could find something you don't like on any pitcher whose pitched in the majors long enough and thats what they'll do.

This sucks for Wright cause now his market value just takes a crap. Hell, you may be able to get him one year now. Still, assuming what Rosenthal is saying is true, I'd go for him.

If this is the Yanks trying to get out of the deal, I hope the MLBPA comes after both the Yankees and MLB, and hard. That's ridiculous, especially after all the 'Steinbrenner is furious, a deal's a deal' rhetoric coming out of NY last year, when it looked as if Sheffield wanted to back out of a handshake agreement.

Yeah, Unfortunately that's not going to happen. If you're a FA major league pitcher there's gonna be something on an MRI that's not perfect. It's just the way it is. There's probably enough on every single one of our starters to "fail" a physical. Yocum, who the White Sox use regularly, was quoted as saying Wrights shoulder "looked cleaner than Colon's and Kelvim Escobar's" -- This was simply a case of buyer's remorse coming out of the yankees camp.

Is this just something that's accepted by the players then, that the team has essentially a "comment period" where it can decide if it really wants a player? I would think that the union could make quite a good case out of this, say by comparing Jaret Wright's mri to that of someone who was signed by the Yanks.

If they don't have any medical records of their own, then I'd think that's at least something they'd want to start filing for the future.

Red Sox signed LHP John Halama, who had been with the Devil Rays, to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2006.

If the season started tomorrow, Halama would be a member of Boston's rotation. Fortunately, the season doesn't start tomorrow. The Red Sox front office knows as well as anyone just how much more effective the 32-year-old has been as a reliever. He might make a few starts over the course of the season, but for the most part, he'll be used in middle relief. Dec. 15 - 1:47 pm et

Reds signed RHP David Weathers, who had been with the Marlins, to a one-year contract with an option for 2006.

It had originally been reported as a two-year deal. This is quite a bit better, assuming it's not a vesting option with a modest innings requirement. Weathers, 35, had a 4.15 ERA last season, his worst mark since 1999. He could be one of the Reds' top setup men if he gets off to a nice start. Dec. 15 - 1:41 pm et

Reds signed RHP Ben Weber, who had been with the Astros, to a one-year contract.

There were a lot of teams interested in signing Weber to a minor league contract. The Reds, though, were willing to give him the major league deal. Weber posted ERAs of 3.42, 2.54 and 2.69 for the Angels from 2001-03, but he fell apart last year. He doesn't seem like a great bet to bounce back at age 35, but since he's probably signing cheap, it's worth a shot for the Reds. Dec. 15 - 1:38 pm et

Just a question, if a club designates you for assignment do you just go to the minor league or you can sign with other clubs?

Neyer explains many baseball rules in simple terms -- http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html

Designated for Assignment

You'll sometimes read that a player has been "designated for assignment."

What does this mean? Essentially, it allows a club to open up a roster spot while it figures out what it's going to do with a player. As we'll see below, there are certain situations in which a team needs a player's permission to either trade him or send him to the minors. So rather than force the player to make a quick decision, the team can simply designate him for assignment while he decides.

More commonly, a player is designated for assignment so the club can open up his roster spot while they're waiting for him to clear waivers, which can take four or five days. Occasionally, a club will designate a player for assignment while they're trying to trade him. That's what happened to Hideo Nomo this past June

I think Phelps is the only person who I've seen DFA'd in the past few days. He'd be a good pick-up to platoon w/ Gload should Konerko be gone.

Hey thanks. We are thinking the same thing that's why I asked the question coz I saw Phelps being designated by the Indians. It was a good move by the indians to acquire him but he will look good on a SOX uni.

He is not a free agent but i figured i should put it somewhere.

Orioles re-signed first baseman-outfielder Jay Gibbons to a one-year, $2.6 million contract. Gibbons agreed to accept the same salary he earned last year, although he can earn an additional $300,000 in incentives. He should start either in right field or at first base. The Orioles could bring in someone to platoon with him. Dec. 20 - 10:11 pm et
