Chisoxfn
Article The deferred money could make it more palatable for the Sox, who are expected to have a payroll of approximately $65 million in 2005, about the same as 2004. Interesting, although I don't believe it what-so-ever, especially considering the author has mentions the Sox looking at shortstop and Randy Johnson. Its pretty clear for them to think that way that their payroll would be a bit higher. He also mentions that the Sox may look to upgrade the catcher position and haven't written off Alomar yet. Add Everett and that $18million. Plus there's about $5 to $8 million in raises for players as well.
maggsmaggs
My guess is our opening day payroll will be around $72 million, I don't think Reinsdorf will greatly raise the payroll, but $5-7 million is a good bet.
sox-r-us
Didn;t we land up with the same attendance #s this past year as the year before? I swear I saw that somewhere I know we were getting much better attendance until the AS game but then everything came apart If the attendance was approx the same, then why should pay roll change? And all that means is the only way we get RJ is if we trade Carlos Lee or Paulie? Which means we will lose the division next year because of not being able to hit .... it is always something isn't it?

We were on pace to outdraw the 2003 attendance figure, but the collapse to the Twins in late July after Maggs and Frank went down. As for RJ, I imagine it would cost one of those two guys as soon as the idea was tossed out there.
WilliamTell
I hope it's not what the Tribue estimated. I think the highest it'll be is 75 million, but that's a stretch even.
Hatchetman
2+2= sox have to deal either lee or konerko to make any kind of roster changes. Amazing how little $65 mil gets you nowadays...
Punch and Judy Garland
For the guy who mentioned the same attendance, the revenue sharing has increased. Accoridn to Rosenthal, teams SHOULD be able to increase payrolls this eyar due to the overall attendance boon. However, with the Sox history and a potential decrease in radio revenue, I see payroll falling into the 60's again.

I think that looks likely too. I have an irrational fear the Sox will deal Lee for prospects to add Vizquel and Milton (and we'll see a bunch of Everett and Perez in the OF). I wish the Sox had gotten the Yankees to pick up more of Contreras's contract On the bright side, I haven't been really impressed with Foltman's coverage of the Sox. It's very possible he's just guessing. I hope.

Yeah, he doesn't seem too bright. Even if KW bumps payroll up $10 mil, you can't do much with that...maybe add a vizquel and a couple of bit players. Significant changes will necessitate Lee or Konerko being traded.
whitesox61382
If I am not mistaken, than I remember all the Sox papers saying that the Sox would have the same payroll in 2004 as they had in 2003(under 60M). Yet the Sox saw an increase of about 10M(58M to 68M), so take what the papers say with a grain of salt since it is just speculation at best. My guess is that the Sox will probably end up in the low 70M range(JR probably has a top end set at about 75M).

The Beast
I thought our better attendance would have a factor on this... I guess not, maybe the days of sniffing in the dirt aren't over.
redandwhite
A winning team can be built with a 65 million dollar payroll, and it doesn't include paying Magglio Ordonez or Randy Johnson for a third of the payroll.
Dick Allen
Disregard what the Cubune says payroll will be. Who in their right minds in the White Sox organization would divulge this to a Cubune reporter? No one. At the very least, the payroll will be a little higher than it was last year. If the correct players are available for what the White Sox consider a fair price, the payroll will rise considerably.
toasty
the comcast deal, should in theory add some payroll flexibility.....
AngelasDaddy0427
First off I never believe anything baseball related in the Cubbie Tribune. Secondly I would be shocked if the payroll wasn't increased by at least a few mil. However anymore then that is wishful thinking.
Soxfest
Payroll with HUGE ticket price increases again better go up also.
