Lieber's option declined

Wow, George Steinbrenner is on tilt. One bad beat and he does the stupidest thing he could do. He just lost the best pitcher on his staff. Good job dumbass.

Also...get him now. You ink him to a 3-year $21 mill deal, and you have a damn good starter. Do this in a f***ing heart beat.

I'd be a little worried to give him a long-term deal, even though he did prove his arm was healthy.

Also I don't think he was their best pitcher. He's not a #1 or #2 starter anymore. What he is though is super consistent, a grinder, and a guy who you can count on every 5th day...Something this team has been lacking.

I can't fathom Georgy boy finding a better replacement for $8M.

Best pitcher is pushing it to say the very least...I do agree with you(even though I just said what I said)

Depending on how you look at Kevin Brown and El Duque, one could argue that he was the best starter though.

I tend to agree with you. So if you're the Yankees, and intend on resigning him, why bother declining his option? to save $2M? This is the yankees we're talking about.  I just don't get it.

They did this with Roger Clemens a couple years ago too IIRC.

Dunno remember

I think it may be so that they can lock him up a couple more years. Seems like they are gonna negotiate a new contract.

Id be very happy if the sox were to acquire lieber. I liked lieber a whole lot on the cubs and his approach to the game hasnt changed since his injury. He still is the same pitcher and he is one of the few guys that i wouldn't place him as "injury prone" even with his devestating injury. Lieber is super conisistant, something the club is lacking greatly mainly because he has pin point control, and his stuff doesnt change day to day(ala Garcia/Garland/Contreras).

If we could get lieber under 7.5 million per, id be happy.

As much as Lieber shut down the Red Sox this season, there's not a chance in hell I give him 8 million dollars for just that.  He was a consistently average pitcher, not an ace worth eight million dollars.  Thats ridiculous.

This is the Yankees we're talking about. They can afford to give Jason Giambi $10 mill this year, see him hit .230 and be out for the year with a tumor, and see no ill effects payroll wise.

All they are doing by not picking up his option is running the risk that they can't come to an agreement and that some other team swoops in very early and gets him to a deal he's looking for. Odds are good that something will be worked out, but if negotiations break down at all, it could get ugly
