Padres and Mariners were discussing a trade that would send Ryan Klesko and Sean Burroughs to Seattle in exchange for Randy Wynn, Scott Spiezo and potentially Jerremy Reed.

The major holdup is that Seattle seems quite reluctant to give up Reed. Personally I think thats a great deal by the Mariners, especially if they didn't give up Reed.

Klesko, even with his semi bad contract >>>> Spiezo and Burroughs has a ton of upside and is already good.

Bruce Levine reported tonight that with the Glaus signing the chances of Konerko going in the 3 way deal pretty much ended.  But it seems like a package surrounded by Garland is an option.

I don't see the point of a Vazquez for Garland deal. $$$-wise, it doesn't make sense.

I tend to agree with you, plus their are some major questionmarks in what Vazquez you get. I could see why the Yanks would do it. If they can't get RJ then they could deal Vazquez and free up some room to sign Pavano (I know, realistically they probably could just keep both, but it seems like they want to dump some contracts).

Realistically though I was just looking through some teams pitching staffs and it doesn't seem like many pitchers are on the block this year. Hudson and Vazquez are about the only two decent pitchers on the trade block.

I still think Joel Pineiro could be had but he's also a questionmark, but he's pretty damn good when not injured.

Odalis Perez sounds like a really good fit the more I think about it. His name has been growing on me day by day over the last 3 days or so.

Then if the Sox really needed to free up payroll somehow, they could move Konerko or even move Everett and just take on a contract or send cash cause I bet someone takes a shot.

However, just watch, if Everett produces you could see the Sox get some offers for him during the season.

I know some of this was posted earlier, but there is some serious stink coming out of the desert.

What no one can figure out is where the Diamondbacks, who have begged MLB to forgive their $80 million debt and owe $55 million in deferrals this season because they never funded the deferred contracts, are getting the cash. Russ Ortiz is getting done at close to $34 million for four years, as is Royce Clayton. And the solution White Sox GM Ken Williams figured out -- Javier Vazquez to Chicago, Paul Konerko and Jon Garland to Arizona, Randy Johnson to New York -- has apparently fallen apart, because Williams has yet to hear back.

The DBacks never funded those deffered payments that people around here loathe so much. That means they don't have the cash allotted to pay those players down the line. This is illegal, per the CBA. Now they are crying to MLB to bail them out while simultaneously doling out contracts of $45M and $34(Ortiz should be announced tomorrow) in two consecutive days.

And to think this is the organization who fired wally backman because HE filed bankruptcy. Hypocrites.

Ya, I've been shocked at how Selig is allowing things to go down their. They have absolutely trashed and bankrupted the team. They were one of the teams that bounced payroll checks a while back to the players (or whatever you call them).

Arizona is a seriously screwed up franchise and they still are throwing around money like water. I would think Selig would be able to step in and say get your budgets in order before you do stuff like this.

Also, what a horrible deal to sign Ortiz. Only thing that helps is the park is decent for pitching. I'm assuming they are signing Clayton and not giving him that type of deal.

I'm also curious as to what other then Vazquez the Sox would be getting. However, that deal would free up payroll for the Sox regardless so they could sign Vazquez and Perez if the Yanks sent cash their way.

But I just don't see the Sox being THAT agressive on the FA market.

That would mean 3 FA signings, a big trade acquisition and then still a pickup to replace Konerko as well as a middle infielder (just a smaller signing). So a total of 5 FA signings and one big trade. I don't know.

ESPNDeportes is reporting that the Mets have guarenteed a 4th year to Pedro, and now are the front runners to land his services.

My dad mentioned to me that the Angels are sleepers in the whole thing. I guess if Pavano goes elsewhere they will quickly enter the fray.

Not sure how valid it is, cause despite other reports from what I heard Pavano would love to play in Anaheim and the feelings are mutual (ie the Angels are gonna make a very lucrative offer when they meet).

I've heard that Pavano cancelled the meeting with the Angels.

Carl Pavano has cancelled his trip to Anaheim in order to return home and begin his offseason workouts.

Agent Scott Shapiro still plans to meet with Anaheim, but it doesn't look like the Angels are serious contenders in the bidding. Pavano has received or is likely to receive offers from the Marlins, Red Sox, Orioles, Yankees, Tigers and Mariners. The Phillies also made a bid, but that's probably off the table now that they have Jon Lieber. From rotoworld.

Odd, I still heard he was supposed to be at the Winter Meetings (pavano that is) and that the teams were gonna meet near the end of them if not the next day.

But who knows, I know they really wanted him. Of course he seems very intrigued with the idea of playing in Boston. If the Mets have upped the offer to 4 years they might as well turn their focus to Pavano and lock him up and then say goodbye to Pedro and collect the draft picks.

The red sox will sign him i believe but they have been pretty interested in david wells,

and if he signs with them they are gonna have to choose between pedro and pavano.

The Angels are close to signing Steve Finley to a two-year deal worth about $20 million, TSN's Ken Rosenthal reports.

That's a bid Detroit could match, but the Giants probably won't, and if the choice is between the Tigers and Angels, Finley is going to stay on the West Coast. As for the Diamondbacks, well, they're capable of just about anything it seems. Dec. 9 - 5:43 pm et From rotoworld.

I really thought they were gonna make a run for beltran.

According to the Toronto Sun, the Jays will look at Tony Clark as a potential replacement for Carlos Delgado.

Lmfao.

That's about as funny as looking at Jermaine Dye as a replacement for Magglio Ordonez. Don't laugh too much.

From Rotoworld:

"With free agency providing no options in the team's price range, the Brewers might trade Scott Podsednik or Dan Kolb for a run-producing right fielder."

The article from the Milw. J/S said MILW was after Dye for RF. Seeing how Carl Everett was in the same price range, would they want him? The Sox could sweeten a deal for Podsednik w/ young pitching, which they said they also could use. Everett, Adkins plus a bullpen arm from AA or AAA like Matt smith or Josh Fields for Podsednik?

No deal would happen w/o the Sox trading Lee for a top SP. Somehow PK isn't going to get one himself. I see Lee's name being brought up this weekend. We'll see what teams the sox are talking to
