New Willie Harris Article

"You are talking about a guy who is hitting .260, with a .350 on-base percentage," said Williams of Harris. "He has a great up-side and certainly isn't going to get any worse. There's so much inside of him waiting to come out. We just want him to commit to what it takes to being that impact type of guy."

Great quote and I hope Harris is our starting 2B in 05

"Yet, Harris didn't take full advantage of his speed and couldn't sustain that particular offensive success. His struggles led to prolonged stretches on the bench, which led to funks both on and off the field."

This comment by Merkin, though a statement not a fact, is the most telling of all. If Harris went into a "funk" off the field, it must mean a big lack of maturity. Ozzie and the team see a guy with all the talent in the world [yes JimH, he's got more tools than most sox players, even if he can't bunt to save his soul] pissing it away by not being responsible and committing himself to the game. It's no wonder he sat the bench when he slumped at the plate. His actions off the field prob. didn't warrant him playing ahead of another guy with less talent, who was trying hard and doing the little things right.

I'm up in the air on Willie. The sox season could sink or swim on whether he matures as a player and a man. The sox were worried enough they tried to get Vizquel as a top priority. The challenge is out there for willie. We'll see how he responds

It was evident at times during the season that he was frustrated. He seems to be either way up or way down. It looks like the biggest thing Willie needs to learn is moderation. Plus with the way he gets beat up, you can tell he lacks confidence at times...

I'm not sure if it was this article or another but KW was quoted as saying something along the lines that Willie "knows what he needs to commit himself to doing in order to be the player he can be".

It's promising that the sox can tell Willie to work on "A", and he could get much better. OTOH, it's a risk going into the season knowing a key part of your club is a question mark. I wish I knew what the issues were w/ Willie.

What's truly "new" anyway?  New, a week old, what's the difference?  :D

Why would fluff like this work you up?  This is just another of the usual occasional offseason filler pieces.  Next -- "Borchard not discouraged".

Relax shooter. Relax.

These are the dog days of the off-season. I'll take any Sox chatter I can get.

Ya, I kind of thought the same thing.  But of course I'm one of the few Harris supporteres on the board :)

I wouldn't call myself a Harris supporter, but I'm not one to condemn him either. It's still too early to tell if he can be an asset to this team, and if so, to what degree.

What is it with Sox fans and 2b? We had to warm up to Cora. Hated Manrique. Dealt with Sax. Hated Ray Ray when he first came up. Do we have some sort of 2nd baseman tradition that I'm unaware of? Is the southside 2B U? Willie Harris did ok last year. Not great, but not bad. If he has a full offseason with Rock Raines and Cora to work on bunting and baserunning, he may improve. Shocking, I know...but it's possible. If not, yank him and trade him. As far as I'm concerned, he's our starting 2b until someone beats him out.

We haven't found an adequate replacement for Nellie Fox yet. :P

Harris' only asset right now would be a pinch-runner with sprinter-like speed who cannot steal bases. How's that for an oxymoron?

Harris blows and the only reason why he is still on the team is because KW fancies himself as some sort of uber-GM who knows more than every other GM in the League.

Meanwhile, GM's across the League laugh at KW for drafting a college closer with a first round pick. I'm laughing too  .

The sooner Crede and Harris are gone, the better off this team will be.
